voices that make you go weak

James Carr... his version of dark end of the street , oh gosh...
Laura Cantrel... saw her live and by the end of her set I had something in my eye, honest... not tears guv'ner....
and Gram Parsons ... the fragility of his voice when he sings 'I loved you everyday, but now I'm leaving, and I can see the sorrow in your eyes' half way through 'song for you'

Aye. That's the best bit of that song. I can hear it now in me head.

Sinead O'Connor...

I quite like the sound Sting's voice too, it's quite distinctive.

e2a: Leonhard Cohen, good call tastebud, and of course, Johnny Cash!

I heard William Burroughs' voice reading some of his work, could have heard him talk for hours.

the indie dream :)

Oh my God is she ever IT
She is indeed IT.

Also, for me:
Jarvis Cocker- Northern accent+big words+filthy delivery
Polly Harvey- From growling to soaring in a bar. Is goddess.
Aretha. Obviously.

Another vote for Bjork, jeff Buckley and Nick cave.
ETA Ian Curtis

Dennis Brown, Jah Cure, Bob Andy, Bernard Collins (Abyssinians), that Marley bloke, Bunny Wailer, Barrington Levy.

We're not being very specific here.

For example, Elvis Costello on I Want You is full of jealousy-fuelled spite and intensity, but on other songs often sounds like a smartarse.

And although I adore Nina, only the intro to Don't Pay Them No Mind brings me out in goosebumps before she even starts, just because I know she's going to.

Buckley doing Hallelujah too.

oh, oh, I forgot that on that Amazing Grace double live album, Aretha Franklin's voice is pretty, erm, damn good, almost good enough to make me convert to christiantiy

That redhead from the original sugababes, siobhan something.

And Lennon on 'a day in the life'.

hmm... it's so difficult to narrow down the options, i mean there's so many fantastic vocalists out there, i could rant on all day...and you don't want that! :D

for some reason i seem to prefer male voices over female ones...at least when it comes to singing... ;)

Bob Dylan, especially on more recent albums, now his voice is more throaty and emotional. His singing on songs like Most of the Time, Love Sick, Make You Feel my Love and Trying to Get to Heaven is just awesome.

ian brown :D

ray lamontange
sam cooke
christopher williams
junior murvin
roberta flack

You know the sort of thing. Maybe not the worlds greatest singer, but a voice that you'd listen to singing the telephone directory. A voice that just connects with you. I've just been listening to Ballad of the Broken Seas and for me, Mark Lanegan has one of those voices, as do Dusty, Dennis Brown and Jimmy Cliff.

What about you then?

Richard Burton reading Dylan Thomas. Used to go to sleep to Under Milk Wood when I was younger... ahhh such pleasent dreams.
