vocal gymnastics do they disturb you?

It's because they mistake talent, power and vocal control for Mariah Carey. Ululating on really long & high notes isn't necessary at all for a singer with good control, but it's often what people who know dick like to do/hear for 'effect'...

Too right. Holding a powerful note with no vibrato is a lot harder than warbling your way through the scales.

Wasn't it Whitney who had little balls of shit pulled from her arse by Bobby when she had piles from too much crack or something?

I'd not heard that. But it would explain why "And I will always love you" ended up sounding the way it did.

It can be done tastefully, Winehouse sings about 5 notes per second but it's not right in your face.

Nope. Divisible by a whole host of numbers, that one. Closest prime to it would be 22229.
The only even prime number is 2, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the oddest prime. Who said mathmaticians have no sense of humour!

I tend to dislike it in pop music, unless it's done non-excessively and with some really feeling, which isn't often.

But then I listen to and sing baroque opera/oratorio which is twiddles a-go-go. Not so keen on the wibbliness of bel canto opera (c19th very showy opera), as, like a lot of modern vocal gymnastics, is more for show than anything else. Some of it can be nice, though.

Ormentation that enhances the music tends to be a good thing whilst vibrato so fruity is makes the note being sung impossible to distinguish is less good . . .

It sounds great in Bach's vocal music, although unfortunately he wrote for the voice as though it were an instrument, not a person, who needs to breathe sometimes. I love singing it, but there's some utterly bastard phrases to get through sensibly.
