It's because they mistake talent, power and vocal control for Mariah Carey. Ululating on really long & high notes isn't necessary at all for a singer with good control, but it's often what people who know dick like to do/hear for 'effect'...

What is worse is when new or auditioning singers do it, its clumsy and inexpert and they do it only because they think it is expected. Why sing 1 note when 8 will do?
