Vista to XP help please

Have you run/downloaded all the windows updates?

Check the "non-critical" ones as well and make sure you have the latest version of the .net framework.

Ah right, so I'm best to use the wired card to connect to my network, then just install everything possible from Microsoft, yes?

I refuse to believe I have to buy a drive to install sodding XP....

Sometimes I really fucking hate microsoft :D

And the first person to say that I should have bought a Mac will get their balls cut off :D

Linux?

Uh oh.

The flicker/fringing is back, only this time it's blue :(

gah!

Are you in negative karma at the moment or something?

I have to say, I was a little surprised that they "fixed" the issue via the diagnostics tests, but still - not impossible I guess.......

Do you have an external monitor you can plug it into just to test? It is likely the sort of thing the Dell support will ask you anyway......

Well, after more than 150 windows updates it looks like I'm almost there!

The only things reporting an error in device manager now are "laptop integrated webcam" and "pci device" which isn't very helpful, as I've no idea what these things are exactly to find drivers for them...

How is the screen?

Was it really worth the time if you may need to have it replaced anyway.....?

If you go to the Dell website you can enter your laptop tag number in and see all drivers for that system - should certainly there the built in camera ones there.

Do you have a thumb/finger print scanner on yours? I had problems with these on some Dells and they constantly show up as a random, generic, uninstalled device in the hardware list....

The screen has fixed itself again, so I can't quite work out if it's a hardware issue or a driver issue. I'm gonna just see how it goes.

The Dell site is pretty unhelpful, as they don't seem to have all the XP drivers as far as I can tell, I get the impression they want you to use Vista.

No thumb print scanner, I'm trying to work out what the "pci device" might be and not getting very far.

It's an "Inspiron 1720" laptop, dunno if thats any help...

The only thing not working now is the audio :o :D

It's not a huge problem as I'll be adding a firewire interface, but it would be nice to get the onboard sound working...

The only option I can choose from in the audio properties is the bluetooth wireless options...

just to warn anyone else thinking of doing the same as Bees.. make sure that all the relevant XP drivers actually exist before installing XP

I tried doing the same on a mate's Packard Bell laptop and no drivers for XP exist at all, so had to put Vista back on - crap really! :(

This is confusing the crap out of me now.

I got what I thought was the right driver from the dell website, installed it, got an error, and now I've got two items marked as needing attention in device manager:

"audio device on high definition audio bus"

and

"modem device on high definition audio bus"

If anyone can find out what XP driver I need for the onboard audio in a dell Inspiron 1720 I'll owe you several pints :)

So there is hardware out there now with no XP drivers?

yup, or they just haven't got round to writing the drivers for XP yet - I don't think they'll bother, probably another way of Microsoft pushing Vista onto people

OK, by uninstalling what I thought was the driver I'm back to a single "pci device" reporting problems, listed under "system devices". I'm convinced this is the onboard soundcard.

Any ideas? I'm so close to the finish now!

Hmm, some reading around the net seems to imply I'm not the only one struggling to get the onboard soundcard working in XP on a 1720.....

<goes back to the search>

Hmm.. looking at the page again it may be specific to the HP Pavilion. I don't know enough to be able to say. It may be worth speaking to Microsoft directly. One thing with this is that it says that it's fix for XP service pack 1. I'm presuming that you have service pack 2, so I'm wondering why you've found that you need the fix.
