Vista to XP help please

Claims to be an NVidea GForce 8400M GS.

1) Download this driver set from laptopvideo2go.
Should be a self extracting pack of files - extract them to your hard drive in a handy location.

(I apologise if any of the following insults your intelligence, but I have no idea how much you know! :D )

2) Right click on the "My computer" icon from the Start menu and go to "Properties" then the "Hardware" tab then "device manager"

3) Find "Display adaptor" on the list and expand the drop-down - it will likely say something like "Generic VGA display"*

4) Right click on the "Generic VGA) adaptor select "update drivers" then navigate through the screens choosing the "install from a specific location (advanced)" then the "Don't search, I will chose the driver" options.

5) Use the "have disk" option when prompted and browse to the folder that you extracted your earlier downloaded files to.

6) It should then bring up the right card/driver option so select it and ignore any "This driver is not digitally signed" complaints......
Hopefully it will then do it's thing and prompt you for a reboot before it works.

*If it already seems to have some NVIDIA drivers or something else installed, you may need to "uninstall" the card completely and then reboot before attempting to run the new ones....

Good Luck again!

:D

I think it might be going back anyway, I think the screen is fucked - I'm getting loads of red fringing and flashing round the edges of stuff, and its doing it in both vista and xp.

Fuck :(

If you gently move the screen back and forth between its fullest, open extent and 90 degrees does the flickering change or go away?

Can you see the flickering/fringing in the BIOS screen at all?

Was it doing it before you installed XP?

It seems to be pretty random, but is only occuring where different colours meet, so you don't see it in solid blocks of colour.

I would still try installing the drivers properly then before throwing it out of the window......

If you do have to take it back, make sure you declare it as a DOA and get them to give you a brand new one rather than dicking you about repairing it.

Will do :)

Cheers for the help, I'm giving up for the day now :D

AKAIK my version of Cubase won't run on Vista, which makes it a complete non starter for me. Neither will my audio interface. Or about every single other bit of kit I own.

Vista and pro audio don't mix.

Indeed they don't.

I decided on a dual boot to get around the problem.

May i take this opportunity to remind you of my general smirkyness, and say "i told you so, but you wouldnt believe me" :D

Getting rid of vista wasn't the problem, getting XP back was :p

Currently in a rather large phone queue trying to get my fucked screen sorted....

Woohoo, I now have XP.

Jusrt need to download and install about a million drivers to get everything working.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I just hope it isn't an oncoming train :D

Right, XP on, video drivers sorted, chipset drivers done, onboard network card done.

Only problem now is that when I try to install the wireless card drivers I downloaded from Dell it says I need to update the wondows installer to 3.1

Any ideas?
