Vista help

Perhaps by googling "vista firewall config" - It's what I'd do if I had to work with something I hadn't used before. See, shit like this is why I assume people know fuck-all about IT until they demonstrate otherwise :p

If you've got stuff half installed, especially AV or firewalls that hook in at a low level, I'd be tempted to get my mate back, backup anything you need, wipe the bastard clean and start again with an OS you get on with.

It takes a fair amount of self research & RTFMing to adopt successfully to a new OS. If, for whatever reason, you don't want to do that then IMO you're in for an headache. If you do want to move across to vista then buy a beginners/intermediate guide to it and bite the bullet ;)

tbh i only got my new (first) laptop in sept, wasntb too bothered abvout software and it came with vista so just went with that, and seeing that it was the 'latest' thing, thought it would be better than xp which i liked anyway.
i havent got many files on it, so just going to burn them to cd now and get someone to install xp, rather than reading aout on things that i dont understand or have the time for:D
and when vista becomes more common, i'll have to get someone to instal it properly and adjust the necessay update settings (ie me choosing when i want them installed, ie never)

finally got my laptop back, mate wiped off vista and installed xp, however, it is painfully slow in terms of web pages loading up and things downloanding. i dont have many files on it and its still quite a new machine, but i thought it would be as quick or quicker than vista.
what is wrong? maybe im used to vista but this is too slow it takes the piss

Have you checked your router and how you connect to the Internet. Sould like the same problem you had with Vista. Why not take to you mates place and see how it is there...?

Im connecting to the net the same way as last time, via a linksy wireless router which is fine. The problem last time was that either the vista updates omehow fucked up my computer because I encountered this as soon as updates were installed, or there was some sort of firewall/virus problem, but I didnt detec any other symptoms and never had this problem in the 6months prior.
This is slow, it takes actual time for web pages to load up
Something is wrong.
Of it doesnt sort out, do you think I can take it back to PC world, still have receipt and been under 6 months, tell them what happened and get them to reinstall vista for free?
I would have done this in the 1st place, as thought my mate would install drivers, xp, etc in a day., but took about 5 days. Could have taken in to the shop and back in that time. Finally got this bloody laptop back after internet deprivation and seems like Im going to have to fucking take it back after all:mad: !!

How do you know your router is "fine". Have you double checked it with a different laptop...? What happens if you connect using network cable instead of wireless...?

I'd be also running through network setting on your laptop, disabling the firewall, etc. And also a scan for malware....

Smash you pooter up with a mallet, burn your house down and sprint headfirst into a wall, is what I reckon you should do.

router is fine because my sister has the same one with same software ans that works the same as when mine was working fine.

Not a good test unless you've taken laptop to your sisters and it (your laptop) is able to download webpages ok...

well my sister lives in the same house, with same software and connects via the same router, trust me that side of things is fine :D

Ok... So your sister connects to the same router with Xp and is fine...? Then either a firewall/virus/malware problem

She uses vista, on the same laptop model and same software and same connection...and her laptop runs normally, the same as mine did, before these problems, so its not a router thing imo
Someone has said just buy the £6/monh cover and then take it back for fixing. Not sure if they will if I wiped out vista and installed xp though:hmm:
I dont know personally how it oculd be a viral/malfunction/firewall problem, unless the aforementioned are related to vista updates, as mentioned, this only started wihen the recent batch of updates were d/l, maybe I didnt correctly restart computer, but that would be unheard.
However, could be what you mentioned because even later when i was fully d/l on updates, the problem wasnt fixed. Im going with the viral theorem
