Visiting County Cork

For gods sake don't get the Swansea Cork if that route is back on, its a horrible boat.
:( That's one of my favourite boat journeys that I have ever done in my life (I have done many) I've done it loads. Hate the plane (except for the signage at Cork Airport THE LITTLE AIRPORT WITH A BIG HEART!). love, love, love the ferry even in a force 10 gale. Tip. Go in a van and get the lorry drivers deal. Much nicer food, cabin, get on & off fast etc etc.
However. I think it's recently folded, Swansea Cork Ferries.

On a related note, is the Irish ferries website just out of date because they have dropped a service, or getting prematurely ready for an extra seasonal summer service...
Irish Ferries website said:
Irish Ferries operates three services between Britain and Ireland, Holyhead / Dublin and Pembroke / Rosslare.

HI Folks

There's a very good chance that the Swansea-Cork ferry will be back in service again for 2009 -
and with a different, much more up-to-date ship! - much nicer <g>

If all goes according to plan the online bookings will start 1st March, and the first commercial sailing
will be mid-April.

Keep up to date with developments on this website

By the way - all of Ireland is great - but some of the nicest people, craic
, food, markets etc can be found in West Cork (but, then, I would say that!)

I'm off to Cork on Thursday. I would like to get out and see some countryside on Friday but I don't want to go too far as we will have to be back in the city for 5 or 6 at a guess. Anyone recommend somewhere nice to go that's not too far from Cork and not much hassle?

Also, what's there to do in the city itself?

Thanks :)

Kinsale is pretty if a bit touristy, but only 17k from Cork so a nice place to go for the afternoon. For pubs,I highly recommend the Bulman in Summercove or the Spaniards Inn, and there are loads of good restaurants if that's your thing ( gourmet capital of Ireland). St Charles Fort is very interesting, and well worth a visit. Or if you have a car, just drive down West along the coast through all the pretty villages. If you want to go a little further Clonakilty and Inchydoney beach would be a great trip - Clon is a great little village (Michael Collin's birthplace) and the beach is unsurpassable.
