Visiting Broadstairs, Kent

If you want a good day out on the south coast, visit Dover Castle. It's an excellent tourist attraction, full of historical interest, and you can go on a tour of the subterranean bunker there. If you're a smoker, there's no shortage of furtive-looking men in the town centre eager to sell you contraband fags or baccy out of a sports bag at competitive prices.

For a beach only (but only with a beach kiosk and a pub) Botany Bay is nice.

You needs a car though.

Broadstairs is much better than Whitstable.

It's alright. I'm confused. We were going to go to Whitby but that was going to cost £££s so went to Broadstairs instead.
Sorry.

Ah, I see.

I like Broadstairs. Did you stay the night? Go to that pub?
We went to loads of pubs! Well, four, which included the local disco hotspot and the beardy Morris dancers hangout so we got a good flavour of the place.

We came down on the Saturday and walked to Ramsgate and back before hitting the ale. On the Sunday we walked to Margate so we certainly covered a fair bit of ground!

Photo report on Broadstairs coming up soon! I liked the place.

I think, off the back of this thread, that we may go and spend New Year's Eve in Broadstairs (New Year's Eve is also my birthday) - during the daytime only. A few years ago we did the same in Whitstable - just went for a walk, ate lunch and then pretty much came home.

I will be very heavily pregnant so we won't be pissing it up or walking very far. We definitely want to get some fresh sea and enjoy the beach for a little while. Can anyone recommend a nice place for lunch for my birthday/NYE lunch. Nothing super posh, a pub is fine but cosy (rather than very smart - get dressed up) with a nice selection for vegetarians as well as meat eaters.

And any other recommendations for things to do - we like walks on piers, tuppeny shove machines, chips on the beach, films - a good film in the afternoon would be nice - that sort of thing.

Here's some pics from our walk around the town when it was pissing down with rain. I'll post up some less soggy pics later.

Should the thread title have been Whitby or Broadstairs, then?
Was Whitstable ever an option? Cos I love Whitstable in all it's smelly oystery dampness. :)

There's a lovely little cinema in Broadstairs. Not sure if it'll be open on NYE, but worth a google. There's an arcade by the cinema, a nice beach and some great cafes. We had lunch at Osteria pizzeria one day, and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks - that looks fab - I saw that Italian and it looks tempting (apparently 4th best in UK according to Carluccio?!?) Gonna check out the cinema now.

eta... there are films on NYE - including Tokyo Story, which I love - but not sure gaijinboy would want to see...
