you should be washing everything at 30 if you're trying to be green.

How are you supposed to do that then? I use washing powder nd have checked several and they all said not suitable for 30 degree washes

I can't wear man made stuff coz I zap people with static electricity if I do :D

we use own brand powder tablets and wash everything at 30 - no worries.

Can't say I've ever had clothes which are so impregnated with sweat I have to throw them away.

I clearly get bored with my clothes before they reach that stage! :D

But imo tablets aren't good(too soapy), we never use the recommended amount of powder, which is why I use powder, so I can control the amount going into the machine iyswim.

Ms T, do you really have no fave 10 yr old clothes??
I am such a hoarder :o

we only use 1 tablet instead of two.

I will try and remember to look tomorrow, though I have a massive box of powder to get through first, just bought it on Thursday! :D

I don't think so - and even if I have, they don't get worn enough to be smelly!

(I have too many clothes)

This happens to me with certain clothes. Yep, man made fibres hold smells and increase sweat. Kyser washes at 60 degrees once in a while for my stinky armpit clothes, seems to keep them good for half a dozen normal washes after that. I never realised that a good hot wash like that could be a solution, but it seems to work. Try it. Love that my man's the king of washing... :)

I'll say it a bit louder, as no one's listening :D

I cant believe no-ones suggested this yet: get yer washing powder / liquid and some hot water, mix together to make a strong solution, and soak the armpits in it, overnight. the enzymes in the powder/liquid should break all the ming down into digested non-smelly particles

works for me when no amount of normal washes can get the B.O. smell out of my cycling jerseys.

I've got a gorgeous dress made out of some kind of man made fibre and everytime I wear it by the afternoon I proper niff :(

Start out the day all "ooh, look at me in my pretty dress" and end up all "bleugh".

in addition to soaking it in hot water with washing powder rubbed into the pits: try rubbing some sort of non-antiperspirant deodorant gel into the armpit of the clothes as well as under your arms, it might help

I'm sure I read somewhere about putting deodorant on your clothes, not on your skin..

Moose, I thought you'd made that name up :o Where would I find it at the supermarket?

Also try nappy sanitiser (I figured if it can stop nappies stinking of poo, it can stop my fave t-shirt from smelling sweaty!) It works! Soak for a couple of hours, then wash as normal (using a bio washing powder / liquid)

I've never seen this stuff, but I've found occasionally washing the armpit area (of the clothing :o :D ) with anti-bacterial hand soap works quite well.

yep some materials seem to do a better job of absorbing sweat smells and then generously giving them back when you revitalise them with more sweat next time you wear them. It's bacteria in (or poss interacting with) the sweat that makes the bad smell. Unfortunately using the hottest wash might ruin the article.

I had a few tops that started doing this. I tried putting a bit of some vanish cleaning liquid stuff on them before putting them in the washing machine. Don't have any left and can't remember the name. this helped as did soaking the armpits in a tub of boiling water. ( I liked them and didn't want to throw them out :o)

Also try using a tea tree oil (that again!) body wash under your arms. :)

I thought it was I was trying to be green too and using a lovely flowers and fairies and friendly to furry things washing powder...

Would that be the "Chocolate fireguard" brand?

Or "Smelly hippy"?

Do tops with viscose in them hang onto sweat more than purely cotton ones?? Should it be avoided?
100% synthetic fabrics do absorb sweat more, IIRC- I have old polyester(?) tracksuit tops which have no cotton in them and they don't breathe at all, so no air in... no air out... naturally things will end up a bit gumshoe after a while...
