Course he would. After all, who'd want to be covered in some cheap curry sauce, filled with chemicals and mixed from a yellow paste by some 17 year old working in a chippie in Barnstable, when they could experience the real thing elsewhere. And then gravy; oh the indignity. Covered with a brown sludge and made into sloppy fodder for taste-challenged Northerners.

It's no wonder he's buggered off. Here's what he thinks of you and the bastards who keep smearing his golden appearance.

I'm from the North and I would never let gravy or curry sauce sully my chips....

Good. No-one's said it's compulsory.

:)

Still I would argue that you're more likely to see those fripperies up North than elsewhere. I don't recall a singly chippie down South having either on offer when I was a nipper - hell, new pies were the buzz back then, adding to the excitement of the hot counter with the saveloys and battered sausages.

My first encounter was with chips and curry sauce was in Wales and the Midlands. And maybe I'm making a bold guess here, but I suspect - with the region's love of all things saucelike on their food - the North may have given birth to the gravy n chips combination. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

I don't remember chips and gravy in the chippies in Sheffield as a kid. I do, however, remember that you get the best fishcakes IN THE WORLD in Sheffield. None of this mushed up fish and potato bollocks you get in the South. You get a slice of fish sandwiched between slices of potato, battered and deep fried.

Delish.

Usually with tons of malt vinegar - vinegar first, then the salt. Makes the salt stick better. And I'm neither north nor south - I'm Canuckian. ;)

Having said that, poutine is heavenly but not available in edible form in this country. :(

And I've become rather fond of curry sauce on the chips, too...

I just voted and i meant to put "yes and I'm from the North" but i marked "no and I'm from the North" by mistake. :o
