Villages Sussex

There's a brilliant lido in Guildford...
But Guildford does have a bit of a hill.

What about Dorking? It's small and has some nice shops to wander past. You wouldn't be there long, and it's easy to get to from Croydon. If you have your own transport, the top of Box Hill isn't too bad for a walk. The footpaths away from the NT centre would be difficult with a pushchair though.

Boxhill has a hill :hmm:

We manage with a buggy all over the place, Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill, Abinger Roughs, Devil's Punchbowl (fucking hard work getting back up from there!) etc.

So BigMoaner should be fine. Can always get a papoose if he doesn't mind looking like a nob-end.

Shere is a lovely village. That whole area of Surrey Hills is great.

I live just on the edge of it and our nearest village Brockham is also lovely and has an ace fireworks display every year.

Can recommend the Parrot in Ockley for a decent pub ad well as the Abinger Hatch not that far from Shere (parrot is nearer Leith Hill)

Parrot has its own farm near dorking supplying meat and a farm shop and a new coffee roasters run by a lovely Swedish couple next to the pub.

tedious.

should i have got pictures?

Just weedling out your prejudices..

Plenty of tweed and Tillys. Hunter boots for the vistitors, big clod hopper cluncky green ones and battered Volvos for the locals

Not how shit really is. The only way you can lump the locals together is they are overwhelmingly white. Although a woman from my work is trying to move here and she is very black, so things are changing. Slowly.

The pub in Coldharbour has been taken over as well and is getting a village shop and some rooms to stay in I think

kabbes will know more although iirc he isn't much of a pub person. Not enough spreadsheets

Haven't been since it was taken over.

It's the people who run the little dudley house as well?
No, it's now owned by the guy who owns Little Dudley House. He lives in, like, the next village along. It's run by people in the village.

Ah right good to see its run by people locally.

Will give it a go again for sure although we were enjoying afternoon lunches at the parrot while I was on paternity leave and the first kid was at nursery.

Decent food in there and nice roaring fires.

The Parrot does the best roast pork I have ever had in my life. 12-5pm on a Sunday. The roast butternut squash is just amazing. We're in there pretty much every Sunday, in fact.

By the way, the Plough in Coldharbour is being refurbished early next year. It's a zillion times better now than it was before the take-over (it's actually clean, for a start! And friendly!) but the refurb will make it a lot better still. Worth bearing in mind should you come for a visit.

Being turned from good country/walkers place into a gastro pub no doubt, mind you it's ages since I've been there. Saw Oliver Reed in there a few times, holding court.
Abinger Hatch mentioned above used to be a great walkers pub years ago; not so impressed on my last visit or two.
I was going to add Romney and Dungerness but the stones would be bad for buggies.

Being turned from good country/walkers place
No, far from it. It was legendarily hostile to walkers.

No again, now they are looking to encourage cyclists and walkers to come in for a pint, but you keep your prejudices. Although, it will hopefully do good food -- so far, so good.

so you've not been there in 20 years then? Helpful.

That place changes hands every few years. Right now it's owned by a collection of locals and seems mostly to have been turned into a daycare centre, judging from the number of screaming kids that always seem to be running around in it.

One of those is sometimes mine, sorry.

The Stepping Stones has taken on the mantle; try walking in with a speck of dirt on your boots and the miserable fucker who runs it bawls you you. The really do expect you to remove your shoes before entering their pub.

That is ridiculous, especially where it is.

My local is dog and mud friendly, as a good country pub should be, at least in the bar bit if it isn't totally pub.
