Victory at Haggerston School

And of course its absolutely normal that workers get paid when they're not working. Cashiers get paid even if there isn't a queue. Cinema ushers get paid even while the films on. Firefighters get paid even when they're not putting out fires. Ambulance staff get paid even when they're not on their way to an emergency. etc.etc.etc.
This is an important victory which shows the strikes and solidarity action work. It should be used as an example for all other workers similarly facing low pay - even if it means the "company will have to pay people when they're not working."

Wouldbe I really don't get what you're going on about here other than symantics.
The union claimed they were being paid below the minimum wage. This is clearly bollox.

That's a pay increase of over £4000 a year. Whatever way you look at it, it's an absolute result for the workers.
That's all well and good if the staff remember / manage to save for the school holidays. It doesn't matter how much money they have coming in while working if they are left skint for the 6 weeks summer holiday.

They already are, hence the 'aparently' below minimum wage.

£4.38x35(presuming a 35 hour week)x52= £7971 a year.
Oh yeah. When my mum was head cook at the local school she only did 6 hours per day then rest of the staff did 4 hours or less.

So no one is going to see a £4000 pa pay rise.

Are you saying dinner ladies have problems remembering things? You've already suggested they would have difficulties opening a bank account and would be likely to splash out - maybe buy a new hat? You should show more respect!

Just to clarify.
The minimum wage is £5.35 ph. It will be going up in October in line with RPI I believe.
£4.85 is taking the piss. I can see where the union is coming from Term breaks or not.

OK then, lets take your next worst case scenario:

£4.38x20(presuming a 20 hour week)x52= £4555 a year.

£9x20x39= £7020 a year.

That's an increase of £2450 a year, a 54% wage increase. It was actually the catering staff who fought for this increase and they seem to have got a very substantial wage increase. You might not be happy, they are.

Gosh, when I get paid just before Christmas, I have to 'make it last' until the end of January. I don't know how I manage.
