vesta chow mein & other dodgy 'food'

In fairness the Blue Dragon chilli noodles are genuinely the greatest of the genre, if a bit posh and for the middle classes at a whopping 67p each.

But it's nice to treat yourself once in a while.

WRT Pot Noodles, there can be only one. Bombay Bad Boy, King PN size.

As a student I cooked loads of curries, chillies and everything else I could with 'real' rice and the chicken or beef things you get in the cans.

And the sooner the stigma attached to hotdogs eaten by adults at home is removed the better

I can't believe that no one has mentioned these yet:

But in the realm of dodgy food, nothing comes close to the one, the only, the very staple of my student days...

The remains of last night's doner kebab (as rescued from down the back of the sofa) and a half can of flat Strongbow (preferably one without fag butts floating in it).

Truly, The Breakfast Of Champions.

Tinned beans and sausages on toast ftw. I've never had a Vesta anything, or a Fray Bentos pie. They are just wrong.

Fray Bentos pies are the bee's knees. I haven't eaten one in over 20 years and I wouldn't eat one now but it doesn't stop me thinking that they are yummy (if very dodgy and bad for you) :D

pilchards in tomato sauce on toast then grilled is well lush

My grandad used to enjoy that with cheese grated on top before slinging under the grill. The addition of some herbs, pepper and/or worcester sauce adds a certain something to the mix too.

I like these and cook on em on their own and then have them with brown sauce.

Bacon and cheese grills.

You can still get Fray Bentos and Vesta Curries at the local shops around here.

I was sad when Heinz stopped doing it's veggie sausages and beans in a tin though. :(

I just looked for them in my corner shop. They only had pilchards in oil, or mackerel in tomato sauce. It has to be pilchards in tomato sauce!

They did have a fray bentos chicken and mushroom pie though, but I didn't buy it, resisted temptation.

No tinned creamed mushrooms either :(
