a short

small bottle of whiskey

a man passed me
eyes to the ground
clutching a small bottle of whiskey
a bottle of water
and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps

eager to tackle the short distance
between the shop and his flat

A few week's ago Pickman's Model (I think) made a comment about how so many people when they're trying to write poetry use the word "shards". Then by pure coincidence the great poet Cheesypoof posted up a, erm... "interesting" poem that had the word "shards" in it.

It was all perfectly amusing. If you were there. At the time.

erm... :)

It was Idaho... ;) :D

Marty,

Congrats! I don't know you really, but have seen you posting on the boards....out of interest, do you read much William Carlos Williams? Seems like he might be an influence?

Matt (the amateur critic!) :)

haven't yet, but i think i'll check him out, it might be me influencing him :D

From what you've posted up, I think you would like Williams:

'The Term'

A rumpled sheet
Of brown paper
About the length

And apparent bulk
Of a man was
Rolling with the

Wind slowly over
And over in
The street as

A car drove down
Upon it and
Crushed it to

The ground. Unlike
A man it rose
Again rolling

With the wind over
And over to be as
It was before.

i do like it, and it is a similar style, and honestly i've never read him before, i'll definitely check him out now :)

Well done, that is ace. I am buying it tomorrow. I like sexy office poetry.

edit: just realised this was in fact :o published 2 years ago and someone has bumped the thread. Still getting it though as I liked both sample poems given on the thread and it is so hard to get poetry published that it must be good.

Good on you, old 'half wildman of Hackney.' Well that's what the Amazon reader reviewer called you anyway.

it's a slow burning publicity campaign - it's still turning over - poetry lasts forever, not just for christmas:cool:

How do you promote your own book, though?

Without spending too much? My mate has recently published the, er, *cough* best-selling Anarchist quiz book (Freedom Press -- snap it up now, there's only a few thousand left), and other than sending review copies out, he's given most of the ones he had away as birthday presents. (See? Anarchists can be thrifty too  ).

(Other than getting your mate to write a review of it on Amazon, eh, marty? ;) )
