Vera Drake - Great Film

I hear ya

I never watch films that start after 10 cos I know I'll only fall asleep

(unless it's over a holiday period)

(why do I always seem to be adding disclaimers lately?? )

I never take any notice of sojourner

(except when i am taking notice of sojourner)

Its a good film i think. Was it just me though, who thought that because the film was set in the 50's, that Leigh actually made a literal pastiche of an actual 50s film. Quite wooden class based characters came out of it.

p.s Having said that the characters were well constructed in other ways apart from Veras daughter who was appallingly wooden. Her portrayal reminded me entirely of all the characters in the other film Career Girls.

i was unimpressed too.

at least i was hoping to learn how to do an abortion (only joking) but this salt/soap solution thing i found a bit boring. it can't be so easy as to squirt a bit of solution up there and then the woman will abort...

no agree with the other critics. the film didn't do it for me all around...:o

I thought it was pretty poor.

Far too much 'acting' going on - (what is it with mike leigh films and women with stupid voices BTW?). The ('exqusitely realised') set and costumes, the ..... pauses ..., the l a c k o f p a c e and the self indulgent performances all got in the way of what might have been a powerful and interesting story.

The central charcter came accross like a simpleton and by the end you were just glad to see the back of her - she had nothing to say for herself other than blubbing. We were given nothing of the stories of the 'girls in trouble' - who all seemed far more interesing than the main character.

I totally agree. Every time she said something about 'having a nice cup of tea' I felt like slapping her.

Oh God...obviously when I was described as Vera Drake without the abortions it wasn't a compliment at all :(

I suspect that meant you are prepared to bend over backwards to help people in crisis even where you put yourself in the firing line.

yes exactly, it would still be a compliment eventhough the film version was not done well...as it happens quite often!

:)
