veggie option for roast dinner which is not a nut roast

It's a 'veggie roast dinner' - roasted veggies innit? You can't argue with that :D

You are having a plate of roasted vegetables. Not a roast dinner. It is not allowed to follow the word "Veggie" with "Roast Dinner" :mad:;)
 
One of those veggie haggis things. Too salty for me, but I'm in a minority of one on this issue in our household.

Shit, I didn't realise it wasn't allowed! :o

Am I allowed to eat mustard with my veg? Or is that just for beef and ham? :confused:
 
I think you're deliberately missing the point mr Steev. You can eat what the bleeding hell you like, but that doesn't stop the meal being affected and often diminished by having to make alterations for veggie eaters.

At the root of it, the sunday roast is an English tradition heavily based around a chunk of roasted meat, with an integral gravy made out of the juices of the joint. It's difficult to make anything as simple and coherent as a veggie alternative.

If we had a tradition of roasting veg and filo pastry parcels on Sunday others would see the Brits very differently. The French would have to call us the Roast Parsnips instead of the RoastBeefs for a start or more likely, those big effete ponces from over the channel

potatoes etc wont be a problem, as we dont have goose/duck fat, so will be doing them in olive oil instead anyway.

Hang on here. the two consituent parts "roast" and "dinner" have no reference to a requirement for meat or otherwise.

the technical interpretation of the phrase "roast dinner" is: a meal, of which the majority of the constituent parts have been roasted (cooked in teh oven).

so there :p

I have an utterly delicious and failsafe veggie haggis recipe. i can dig it out for ya if you like!

the only difficult ingredient to find is oatmeal. please don't substitute rolled oats (which are for porridge!) you should be able to get oatmeal in health food shops such as Holland & Barrett or your local alternative :)
 
It's madness using literal terms here. Everyone knows that food - and indeed what's virtually a national dish - has associations and expectations above the literal

It's like opening a Fish and Chips shop and wondering why people aren't satisfied with your offering of a smoked mackerel goujon and a maplewood chip.

yup, fo sho..... it's actually really hard to buy plain (non-salted, non-roasted) peanuts in supermarkets here, so I'm pretty sure I used some other nut. cashew would be fine and totally tasty!

Actually the point is that veggies eat roast dinner too and the op is asking for info about including them which is easy, as a meat eater I do not find my roast dinner diminished if I eat meat with it or not, I dont particularly like potatoes roasted in meat, I prefer them roasted in olive oil and rosmary. I like onion gravy not meat gravy.

We have loads of veggie roasts, and meat does not need to be integral part of it - I sometimes go to waitrose and get just a piece of meat for me, and have it with the veggie roast - but I can take it or leave it, either way it is still a "roast".

My favourite veggie roast has to have yorkshire pudding and I love the mushroom and tarragon lentil loaf that Ste makes with roast potatoes roast carrots and sprouts with walnuts.

Its a matter of taste, and like you say tradition - but tradition to me is only how your family cook YOUR dinner for you and my family doesnt have it how you do, so I dont think Steve is missing the point. I certainly dont think oh god how will the french see me now that Im not eating beef with my roast lol :D

Mr Retro - something tells me this isn't the thread for you, having offered no helpful comments to the OP and infact only making negative comments to all the dishes offered here which for some reason, offend you to your core, in their nomenclature.
