Veggie BBQ ideas? (proper veggie - no fish or seafood)

Not bad going. A thread on veggie bbq's and after a dozen posts people are talking about meat

tikka panneer is fucking lush.
A box of camembert melted in the embers with some fresh herbs and garlic stuck in, served with crusty bread is great too.

Why not just stick it in the oven, the BBQ does nothing for the cheese? Then you can have it with the main meal as its a delicious thing, rather than waiting for the BBQ to cool down or its instant death for the cheese.

Because it takes on the flavour of the coals and the wood. Far better than doing it in the oven

All the suggestions are looking for meat substitutes. Halloumi is too salty to be used for much, paneer is fine but a bit bland.

Since when has cheese been a meat substitute? It's fucking cheese. If you can't get your head round a dish with no meat in then you are probably posting on the wrong thread.

... and marinated paneer is far from bland!

Interesting thread. I mainly cook on charcoal when there's no other cooking method available, like when camping, so I wouldn't think of making food that needs to go in the oven. I do all sorts of veggie stuff like stuffed aubergine and peppers, (rinsed) halloumi, flat breads etc. Not a burger in sight.

Barbecues are a fun event in and of themselves. You don't need to justify using one instead of an oven. Some people like to go camping, but they could just sleep at a nearby hotel if they wanted (IYSWIM). It's fun, it's social, and we veggies want to join in.
We don't eat meat - so you might as well not go on about it.

Before I acquired the taste for olives, I was with a bf who loved them, so I used to buy those expensive little jars of olives in olive oil infused with garlic and herbs. He used to take care of the olives, and we used to use the leftover garlicky, herby oil to marinade/brush on aubergines sliced lengthways, and it was much better than using regular olive oil. Barbecued aubergine slices are just heavenly.

Agreed, they're my favourite thing, but they have to be brushed with criminal amounts of oil and garlic, and sprinkled with chilli flakes.

Paneer is beautiful.

Every BBQ I have been to as of late, I have had the lettuce in a bun or just said fuck it and ate the meat after a few beesr :o

Corn on the cob? Check!
Halloumi? Check!
Paneer marinated in the oil from the top of a jar of lime pickle? Check!

And for the non-bbq elements? Spanish tortilla, patatas bravas, a big old cheese plate, savoury rice with mushrooms and peppers, and a load of veggie burgers and Quorn (she loves Quaorn and they don't have it on Oz)

The solitary veggie will feel inundated.

Sounds good Chris. I take it this BBQ's going on now, or you're forward planning like a man possessed.

Well, it'll be on when the guests work out how the hell to find us. They are taking the oddest route from Henley to Norwood I've ever heard of, but I'm sure they'll make it at some point ;)

Good work. With the size of that tempting spread I suspect that you've probably overeaten already. Just for sampling purposes of course.

And if your guests don't turn up you've a hell of a pack lunch tomorrow.

Well, you need a side dish of two for all the meat, don't you? And you're virtually duty bound to try one of everything, unless your belt explodes or something.

;)

Besides kebabs, does anyone have any suggestions?

Danke :)
well I'm going to say kebabs anyway godsdangit, cherry toms, baby or growup corn, green beans, bits of pepper, onion etc. but not forgetting your marinade/sauce of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce.

there, I said it.

:D

I've just sowed 4 packets of sweetcorn seeds in anticipation of BBQing them later on in the year with copious amounts of salted butter mmmmm....
