Veganaunary - Jan 20

The only time I tried this, it was a dismal failure.

I'm skinny to start with, so losing weight is not an option - which was one result, as was trouble with B12 and iron levels. I also need to watch my blood pressure (as it is far too low) ...
Also, too much nuts & whole grains set off my IBS (not helped by stress and 2nd hand fag smoke).

Much as I think humans eat too much meat as "average individuals", the human digestive system and dentition are more omnivore than herbivore.

I did this a couple of years ago and stayed vegan ever since. Was already veggie though. Cheese and butter were the things I thought I couldn't live without and it's fine! I use vitalite dairy free, or in baking tend to use oil and soya milk. I'm not lacking any vitamins, and neither have I lost any weight, sadly :D Best to avoid cheese substitutes for a while I reckon, get used to food without a load of cheese dumped on top. Though I do now like the vegan applewood occassionally. Stir frys, curries, noodle soups, vegan sausage and mash, soups are all easily vegan...

This is one thing that would concern me about Veganahauary. Lapsing into trans-fat laden convenience Frankenstein horrors.
I'm hoping to lose weight and be generally more healthy because I'm not going to even try to replace butter. Coffee will be either with oatly barista or black. Having coffee black negates the need for sugar. My body definately feels better with less meat and I don't eat much cheese.....more as toppings but vegan cream cheese made from cashews is simple to make. I think I'm going to find fish and seafood hard. These days I only eat one meal a day anyway.....

One meal a day? Many, many snack times, I hope - otherwise getting thin and wasting away will happen. :(

I heard of a diet that involves this (the OMAD diet). Sounds tough.

When I can make a decent omelette from aquafaba I could fairly easily go vegan - barely even eat butter any more. I could pretty much go veggie right now, and I am one of those piss-take ones who eat fish, just by default.

One thing I've found over the years is that you think you can't live without certain foods but once you spend a few months off them you just don't think about them. Like when you stop the cat going in your bedroom, and for a while it's absolutely obsessed with getting in and scratches at the door and meows at 5am but after a while it forgets the bedroom even exists.

The neuroscience bods call this an "extinction burst". Like when you try to open a door you don't think is locked. You try once, then tentatively try again, then jiggle the thing like fuck, then stop.

When trying to break a habit it's good to keep in mind that your brain is going to do this.

I did it with salt, but I had to roll that back slightly because you do actually need some salt. Very much less than is in most prepared food though and now processed stuff just tastes insanely salty to me. "Normal" butter is just wtf.

I'm having stomach issues -docs on Friday....so my appitite has reduced , plus my tummy objects to meat sometimes and anyway when I get home after a 12 hour shift in can't be fucked to eat or cook......just pass out.......

Our cat does this, around 6-7am :o I think it's because if the door isn't locked she can actually open it by jumping on it (I'm not entirely sure how she achieves this, haven't seen it from the outside). So we have to actually lock the door to keep the purring machine out (loudest purr even, hence her being banished from the bedroom) but every now and then she makes a failed attempt. She did it this morning and gave me a fright!

Shit, mate. Hope things work out - sorry for being flippant.

Hope the work situation works itself out too. Have done 12+ hour shifts in the past to shift the overtime but it’s a shitter.

Look after yourself.

Thanks it's ok-I prefer doing 12 hour shifts but it does take a lot x

I *might* give it a go. I'm not strictly anything as restrictive diets and me don't mix well, but only eat meat occasionally, am intolerant to eggs in any quantity and have massively reduced my dairy intake.

Naturli is just as nice as butter and I like hazelnut milk for coffee, cereals etc. The things I do still buy fairly regularly are yoghurt, to have a dollop on porridge or muesli, and cheese for things like baked potatoes and sandwiches. The former I could probably just do without and the latter would mostly be a case of making different things that don't expect cheese I think.

One of the things I've always struggled with is not having a ready pure protein hit*, but having discovered I actually really like tofu scramble has helped a lot with that one.

*early attempts at veganism in my youth resulted in secret trips to the shops for pork and egg pies

festivaldeb's been veggie since she was 18, but now she's very much heading veganwards ... she describes this as being an aspiring vegan like she tried for a year or two 20 years ago or so.

She's sacked all dairy and I'm getting her a big cheeseboard of vegan cheeses for Xmas.

Her weak point, also mine**, is fish finings in beer. 100% vegan would be theoretically possible, but in pub-life practice :p both of us ale-lovers say : "Fuck that shit! Life's too short!" :p

**I'll just be staying veggie, like I have been for, erm, ever ...
