vaughan resigns as england captain

Don't forget hoggard.

As good as he is, i think its time for some new blood. He has lost his pace and there must be better players coming up through the ranks that would be a better long term prospect. I think the selectors dropped him too early but now he has been away i think it would be very difficult to come back with any real meaning in the long run.

Bit sad that they select pattinson ahead of him though...

That was a shocker yeah. It seems the wheels really did fall off that week. Its the age old problem though isnt it - England selectors havent got a clue whats going on in the counties. That selection just about summed up how crap they must be.

Thing is I don't think there's that much wrong with the batting line-up (aside from Shah>>>>>>>>>>Bopara for me) they just don't apply themselves. Look at the way Cook and Bell got out in the second innings, brainless shots.

I'm not for wholesale changes because we've been down that road and it doesn't work, and tbh I'm not sure there are that many more talented batsmen in CC than the current top six (aside from the obvious one). Tresco definitely but retired, Key maybe? Afzaal? I'm struggling tbh.

The current mob need a wake up call though.

Cook and Strauss aren't very suited as a partnership. I would seriously consider putting Key and Denly is as openers, they seem to work well together, and are both individually good too. Denly might be a bit inexperienced, but it would be an interesting move to select a partnership rather than two separate players and just hope that they play well together.

I don't even care if he's been on form for his county, Pattinson is too old to start an england career.
A year younger than Stuart Clark when he made his debut for Australia.

I'm a firm believer in picking your best team regardless of age - as Australia have done for a while. My problem with Pattinson was not his age but that he was totally unproven.

Well Bopara has been called up to the test squad. Hardly a radical selection for the final test though is it, considering nothing rides on it and it offers the oportunity to draft in new players with no pressure. As i said earlier, it makes you wonder what the selectors do for their money.

Owais responds with 96 off 102 balls as the backbone of the Middlesex innings vs Somerset in this evenings Pro40 at Lords.

:D

Agreed....stripping the team down for the sake of it isn't the solution when there are very few palyers staking a claim at county level.
