Vans / Campervans - Where To Look (Again)

I only mentioned that one because the conversion looked good for you. You can't tell if anything is a good buy till you've swarmed all over it with a torch and a thing to prod it with. However, LTs offer loads of room, and because they're relatively ugly, they go for very low prices compared to Type 2s (like ours). They are a bit slow, though.
LPG saves money - FAQ's here. A bit rubbish where we live because there aren't many places to fill up, but in your part of the world it's easier. You'd want to see the receipt and maybe details a warranty on an LPG conversion.

That LT looks good!

I like the way LTs look. I don't think they're ugly!

They're supposed to be pretty reliable, too....

Dub, I know it's blimmin' miles out, but having driven down this road rather alot of times recently I noticed there's about 3 or 4 second hand van dealers up there, starting at about where Picketts Lock lane crosses and going on past Ponders End. Just keep driving (or bussing).

The road is Meridian Way (A1055).

THe LPG conversion is only guaranteed until Sept on that VW....

I'm getting quoted a lot to get covered on a regular pre-conversion van - circa £600 as I have no insurance history. A camper is coming in around half that.

Our postcode seems to mean that most companies are demanding an immobiliser to be fitted before they will cover for theft. So that's another £100....

With MOT's - do you have a certain amount of time to get it done or once the old one runs out are you expected to have the new one done and dusted?

Dumb Question..

We're probably going to have a look at the VW.

it's currently classified as a van, even though it's probably camper-certifiable.

so what's the process if we buy it?

if we want to get insured to get it home, we presumably CAN'T get it insured as a camper because we have to get it reclassified first? so how do we do it?

and is the reclassification process simply taking it to a garage, them ticking off the 3 or 4 points needed (water, eating area, bed)

or is it simply that it has to BE a camper and you don't need to reclassify it or anything?

Are you looking at specialist campervan insurance? Might be useful, and if you can specify a limited mileage it can be cheaper.

Did you answer the MOT question?

We've got some really good info back from the seller, we're going on Sunday

and we got a better quote from CIS than Adrian Flux in the end, strangely... that's as a camper with limited mileage

does this sound about right?

As far as fuel consumption goes, it does about 15 miles to the gallon on LPG, which doens't sound alot, but if you think that it's half the price of
petrol then it's about 30 miles really. Basically it's a 60 litre tank, and
it does about 160-170 miles on a full tank whihc costs between £35 and £40
to fill up, so not bad really.

Well the maths is right. Dont think there are many places on the continent where you can fill up with LPG though, (might be wrong about that) if that is a factor.

Yup - that's about as shit as ours, but as they said, you would have the benefits of cheaper LPG. :D

There are plenty of filling stations in France and Spain, usually on major routes, but it's no longer so much cheaper than petrol in France due to tax increases.

PS: Don't forget to lie on the ground and get right under it with a torch, to check for rot in the floor, under the wheel arches, and particujlarly where the water from the sink drains out.

Are you taking someone with you who knows what's what?

Mr moose's handy tips:

When you get there, open the engine bay up and make sure it's cold (i.e. they haven't warmed it up before you get there)

Check underneath for any oil leaks. And check oil levels when it's cold with dipstick. Check radiator cap for goo.

Check inside for mould or damp-feeling curtains or bedding, and inside cupboards for damp. Particularly where the sink outlet is.

The AA will let you know if it's going to cost an arm and a leg to get it through the MOT in July. If it's less than £200, it's probably worth the money.

If you buy it, change the oil and plugs, and REPLACE THE PIPES FROM THE GAS BOTTLE TO THE COOKER before you use it. That's a job loads of people neglect, despite it costing about a fiver, and the biggeest cause of van-consuming fires.

ello

we're hopefully going to look at this tomorrow - http://www.gumtree.com/london/68/8990068.html

the mileage is legit (it was an airport ambulance that mostly just sat on the tarmac), it's a bit more than we wanted to pay but it seems just perfect./

the only drawback is that it's petrol. i asked the owner about mileage, he reckons they get about 450 miles off a 50ltr tank, but that seems really high?

if we really like it, we'll hopefully barter it down a bit. I've just always wanted one of those Mercs and inside, at least, it seems to be a beauty.

if we wanted to convert to LPG, how easy / expensive is that?

Oooh, that one's lovely!! The extra £500 opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Don't forget to check on the log book what it's described as, and get insurance quotes based on that. (although I think you may have already covered that on the LT). Definitely ask to see as many MOTs as possible to certify the mileage. What year is it? The mpg seems almost unbelievable - if that's true, I'm buying one :D
