Vampires

Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series is a good 'un - set in an alternate universe where Dracula won ('cause he also thought the ending of Dracula was a bit rubbish), and packed with references to cinematic and literary vampires.

And here's Newman explaining the premise:

It still seems to me something of a disappointment that Stoker's villain, after all his meticulous planning and with five hundred years of scheming monstrousness under his cloak has no sooner arrived in Britain than he trips up and sows the seeds of his eventual undoing by an unlikely pursuit of the wife of a provincial solicitor.

Let the right one in (book and fillum) is supposed to be very very good.
I am legend the book (by Richard Matheson) is one million percent better than that shite movie from a couple of years back.
Salem's Lot (the book) is worth a shot.
And I've heard good things about Fledgling by Octavia Butler.

Love Bram Stoker's original novel. I was about 13 or 14 the first time I read it, and used to cover it up at night because the cover scared me so much. Love the old Hammer horrors - I met Christopher Lee RL in the late 70s, and he was just as intimidating and gorgeous as on film. Haven't read any of the Twilight stuff - all I've heard about it puts me off, and my daughter, who has read a couple of the books and seen the film doesn't rate it, which is enough for me.
My favourite 'modern' vamp is Spike from Buffy.

Dozy, I stuck with Frankenstein to the end, but it was heavy going. And I've read the Castle of Otranto, when I was doing A level English and studying Northanger Abbey. Have you read The Mysteries of Udolpho?

Anyone else read Polidori's The Vampyre? Deserves credit for being the original, but otherwise...

And Queen Vic is a bloodsucka too!

Barbara Hambly's "Immortal Blood" is rather toothsome, too.

Salem's Lot is an excellent read.

Let the Right One In. Very highly recommended.

Filmwise...Near Dark is worth watching too.
