'Value' products - what's good?

I get my toilet paper from lidl. I think it's bounty or something (or is that kitchen roll?). Anyway, it's fine.

I'm so pleased everyone else hates green peppers too - they're fucking horrible aren't they?

Testing out Tesco's Value Orange Juice at the moment. Its fine as a summery drink which you can dilute with water.

There was also something even cheaper on the shelf called Orange nectar. Looked at the ingredients and it was orange juice which had been diluted already.

Cheeky :mad::rolleyes::(

I get the Aloe Vera stuff. And of all the brands that do AV Arse Wipe I think the one from Lidl smells the strongest and the nicest.

I would happily buy value tins, loo roll, things like flour and sugar

We usually go to Lidl or Netto for a big bulk buy of some other things, which I think is good value as I'm not too fussy about brands.

Or Asian supermarkets are quite good value

and I like green peppers

Value toilet paper is more or less the same as normal toilet paper. Its not as if its radically different in the way that the sort of shiny toilet paper you used to get in schools. One question though is is it actually value because although you get more rolls for your money the paper is wound so loosely that you get through them much quicker.

Oh yes, it's not the quality of the paper itself that I have concerns about - there is just not much of it and it doesn't last five minutes. It's a false economy.

In an effort to reduce the cost of my ever-increasing shopping budget, I thought I'd buy a few value things but frankly I'm unimpressed. I got binliners for the kitchen bin which are so thin, the weight of a rice cake makes a hole. And a pack of those sponges with green scratchies on the back but they're really insubstantial too so I can tell they'll last me about a week, consequently saving me no money whatsoever.

Is there anything that's good (any supermarket) or should I just forget the idea?

Some of the Sainsburys Basics things are good. I say some, but you have to be careful as a lot of it is shash - but the fruit can be OK, especially the bananas.

Oh, and tinned tomatoes - if I'm cooking a curry, it really makes the square root of f.a difference whether I used a Sainsburys basics tin of tomatoes or a Taste the Difference tin. :)

Oh yeah, juice is fine. I can't tell the difference between that and the expensive shit. Squash is good too (once you get used to it).

Yes, the juice, although you're usually restricted to OJ.

I think the '3 litres for 2.25' selection of higher quality juice in sainsbury's is pretty good, the raspberry and apple one is lush, at about 70p per litre it's only marginally more than the value stuff.

another vote for lidl/aldi. Often their foods are cheaper than supermarket own brand( even value for some things) and far far better quality:)
since I switched from the big supermarkets Ive saved an absolute fortune and the meat at Lidl has been great too, just in case people think it must be dodgy/poor quality. Their cold meats, cheese and youghurts are great too:)
I tend to buy more in LIDL than Aldi but always pop into aldi, their face cream has been proven to be as good as the big brands such as Olay and its about £2.50:)

Aldi has a selection of fruit/veg at 50p per thing at the mo,last week I had nectarines, pack of three peppers and grapes, all at 50p:)

I find Sainsbury 'value' orange juice better then the mid price ones. Never had the apple and raspberry one though so going to look out for that.

I would rather go to Aldi/Lidi than buy the basic range in the supermarkets.

Their business model is to have 1500 of the most commonly eaten products, generally 1 of each. Supermarkets have 35000 products.

I tend to agree that the 1 product of anything they do stock is rarely less than reasonable quality, sometime very good. Aldi do large box of cornflakes that are much nicer than Kellogs IMO.

Asda's cheap vodka is scarily palatable once it's been poured through a water filter a couple of times. :)

Yeah you do have to be careful. As someone said, basics meats tend to be awful. I made the mistake of buying some basics mince when I first got back from China and was struggling to get used to the prices of things. Mind you, good mince here is one thing that doesn't cost much more than in CHina - 2.50 for half a kilo, probably 2 quid in China

Erg.

When I had an alcohol problem, I drank Tesco Value vodka a lot, as it was so cheap.

It's hard to describe, but imagine sandpaper in liquid form squirted by Satan himself.

I know what you're saying
But run it through a filter (several times) and you can drink it straight, without so much as a wince! Dangerous. We decided that they put shit in it to make it difficult to drink as a way of saving a lot of peoples eyesight and livers

A lot of orange juice is diluted. It's not because they've diluted the standard strength orange juice, it's because they've condensed the regular orange juice so that it's less expensive to ship or whatever, and then diluted it to bring it to regular strength. Or something.

If you check out the packaging, a lot of orange juice is 'made from concentrate' and has water added.

But won't you think of the poor exploited banana farmers? :( (((banana farmers)))

Great advice there for me as a recovering alcoholic on a budget! :D

Except the filter is useless after that (even for more vodka), and I think you'll find it's cheaper in the long run to buy slightly better vodka. At least if you're using Britas or somesuch. Maybe there's Tesco Value water filters?
