'Value' products - what's good?

I go to Wing Yip personally. And I already shop at lidl for loads of things (stuff in cans, oil, fizzy water, fruit and veg). So do I have to accept that with my lidl/chinese supermarket shopping, I'm making all the savings that are possible without sacrificing quality?

Not sure? But it sounds as though you've the value bases covered.

Maybe it's a case of food efficiency and planning rather than anything else? The process of getting a big bird nigh on every week seems to really cut our food budgets, especially if you get a reduced offer. Last week and we got a huge free range bird for £5 - enough to make a roast for 3, soup and a risotto. When thrifty and organised, leftovers in the fridge here tend to get used up ruthlessly in stir fries, curries and other bits.

Dries pulses and cheaper cuts of meat can really help. I'm beginning to get tempted by that often offered hand-me-down pressure cooker, but if you've time supervising/herding the little one it could be an option.

What do you actually buy at sainsburys?? Tbh I've always thought it was overpriced and not always that good on the few occasions I've been there. But then I've pretty much always had to watch what I spend and now I'm so used to it I can't not do it iykwim :o

Maybe it's just the Dundee one that's not that great??

In an effort to reduce the cost of my ever-increasing shopping budget, I thought I'd buy a few value things but frankly I'm unimpressed. I got binliners for the kitchen bin which are so thin, the weight of a rice cake makes a hole. And a pack of those sponges with green scratchies on the back but they're really insubstantial too so I can tell they'll last me about a week, consequently saving me no money whatsoever.

Is there anything that's good (any supermarket) or should I just forget the idea?

We're talking Sainsburys here aren't we?

Binliners - agree with you
Sponges with green scratchy things - are fine as I use one a day and throw them away for hygeine reasons. At 14p for 5 I can afford to.

Sainburys standard instant coffee is 66p per 100g and imo is as good as Nescafe (£1.99) and cheaper and better than Lidl alternatives. They must be making a mistake.

Sainsburys 'ordinary' pork mince is generally better eating than their 'Healthy Options' version with reduced fat and more affluent looking. packaging It's also half the price .... and rarely available in anything other than larger stores for some suspiciously convenient reason. Sainsburys Locals, or whatever they're called, take the piss.

We probably make our biggest savings at the poundshop (technically a 99p store). The cleaning goods are fine. I really rate Astonish products and Easy isn't bad either.

I always buy value weetabix - i prefer it to genuine weetabix
Value mince - piss off with your super lean mince :)

The basics are OK actually, and they are Fairtrade :p

Fairtrade? No shit? The ones in the white and orange plastic bags?
Might give them a try.
In the meantime don;t buy Iceland teabags...80 for quid might sound nice but they're weak as fuck and bitter with it.

Unbelievable as it sounds, Tesco Value reduced fat mayo is good - it's nicer than the non value one.

no way, ever. i've never had value teabags that make even a drinkable cuppa, let alone a good one.

Let me add my tuppence to the value teabag debate. I bought Tesco Value teabags the other day. (33p for 80 bags) with a sense of trepidation. I hate value food that is horrible.

But actually they are OK. Not as good as PG tips but if you let it brew a little bit longer its OK imo :)

Tesco Value quiche is right proper tasty. Even cold it's got lots of flavour whereas I usually find shop bought quiches are weak and watery. Don't know about one from Sainsburys though. All the value biscuits and chocolate biccies from Tesco are nice although Flashy doesn't like the cookie so much. All the more for me *nom nom* :D

Sainbury's Basics vodka- we kid you not! Maybe not an everyday buy (one would hope not) but actually a perfectly smooth and decent drink for all your vodka-type needs.

Sainsburys basics peppers and bananas - big bag of peppers for less than buying two regular 'loose' ones. Big bag of bananas for around £1.20

Value toilet rolls, kitchen towel, sugar, salt, oil & pasta all seems to be ok

Also, tinned fruit, veg and pulses don't seem any different from the standard supermarket brand

I love the 99p store. Box of 100 tetley tea bags for 99p and last time I was in there, they were doing 4 packs of branston baked beans for 99p

Indeed! We have the branston beans in the cupboard. :D
The food they have in varies greatly but it's often worth doing a sweep before hitting a supermarket.

Agree on Sainsbury's pepper bags - esp if you can get them when they have a 'not-many-green-ones' batch.

Sainsbury's cheapo bacon is nice too, its just chunky and rougher cuts - nice and tasty as it goes.

Their wholewheat spaghetti used to be good value too. Not sure now with price of pasta going through t'roof.

Another not to scrimp on IMO - is Potatoes. Agree on Tea bags, buy good uns.

the veg comes out of the same field as the other veg. it's just not as pretty.

Nah, but they quite often use heavier cropping/less tasty strain for value products though. Watery 'value' tomatoes of no discernable flavour, white spuds that don't fluff up as well in roasts and so on. Most is fine, but there are some things worth upgrading to.

Seasonal stuff in markets often offers way better value than the value ranges too.

my uncle supplies all of the supermarkets and they all come out of the same field. i'd just check the variety on the bag. although, to be honest most supermarket toms are rubbish.

it does amuse me when i see some parsnips go into an m+s bag and some from the smae field go into a tesco value bag.

D'ya know I almost added a comment about not many green ones being preferable but thought I might seen weird :D Does anybody really like green peppers? My favourites are orange and yellow ones :)

(I can't believe I actually have an opinion on this!)

i hate green peppers!

it really annoys me that supermarkets always put green peppers in those multipacks - i don't eat them except in chilli and i don't make it that often.

so 90% of the time they go straight in the compost. what a waste.

Nope, I only like red and orange
