Usenet?

Well, not every single post...

Code:
X-No-Archive: Yes
^You just put that in your message (or better, in the header) if you don't want it archived for any reason.

What about all the posts they got with the acquisition of DejaNews. Hard to add in that line to posts already made.

You're not really confused are you, however you do have a point. :)

I've never had a Mac or got stupid Ubuntu to work so I don't know what the answer is.

I've even got a laptop that Ubuntu won't work on. I'm collecting hardware that it won't work on and then one day I'm going to open a museum.

You can run it quite well on VirtualPC from microsoft.

Ubuntu?

I can't really understand why it won't just install on the laptop tbh. Last time I tried it just installed the partition and then refused to do anything else, so basically just fucked the boot up. Cheers Ubuntu. :(

I've checked the linux laptop pages and mine is on there with some incomprehensible gibber about updating the bios, which I did anyway but it's still not playing. Funny, cos XP works fine on it. Cheers Windows. :)

You can install Ubuntu within VMWare or Virtual PC (you can also download images where its already setup for you...). Also try using the ubuntuforums.org, posting up details of your laptop, etc...

You might want to make another thread for this, btw...

Yeah true, if I can be arsed to try again I'll post up another thread. Cheers. :)

@ Sunray #31 (sorry can't quote with opera mini), even back when it was deja your posts would not have been archived, so google would not have inherited them if that makes sense.

Alrighty!

Finally got this sussed and am starting to see the benefits - especially with download speeds.

*ahem*

Does anyone have a Newzbin invite I can purloin?

:D

You should be able to get similar nzb info from Merlin's index which is free.

Also, some usenet programs (such as altbinz) allow you to search or directly browse the groups yourself so that you don't need nzbs.

Hm - is OK, I found a decent site for the nzb's now and subscribed.

Seems to work well.

I am using Unison as my client (Mac) and GigaNews for my feeds.

To be honest I think Rapidshare is just as good as usenet, but cheaper and with less complication for the less experienced internet user.

I'd say usenet would be as good the if the newsgroups where looked after and moderated properly. After having a look around my isps server there seems to be more spam and malware than anything else. As much as I hate to say it I feel usenet is dying but that may just be down to me looking at crap newz servers........

Seems fine for downloading stuff. There's also several quality news-groups on Usenet, espcially the moderated ones.

I subscribe to both, tbh. Rapidshare is great for the slightly more obscure stuff thrown up by the music blogs, but for larger files it's more convenient to use usenet programs which are designed to take the legwork out of downloading (and often unrar'ing) multiple sections of a file. In other words, it's a lot easier to click on one link to download a 4G file, rather than 40 rapidshare links (only to find that link 32 has been deleted!)

Don't you use the Rapidshare Download manager? You just copy and paste the links en masse to the downloader, it verifies the links are live, then downloads them all for you.
