Someone's uploaded the coverage of Micheal Johnson watching Bolt's 9.58 from last night - his face is a picture!

That'll be because he'd just spent the time before the race saying that he doubted Bolt would ever improve on his time in the Olympics.

He got caught out in a very similar fashion at the olympics too, saying that Bolt didn't stand a chance in the 100m, he wasn't experienced enough.

Methinks hes a little miffed.

0.11 of a second off 100m world record is a good effort at any time, but when the previous record was already pretty astonishing then that new time is truly incredible.

Let's hope he is, well you know...

I must get tested all the time - in fact I think he said so after the Olympics that he'd been tested 6 times during the competition - so unless someone is really fucking up, or he has the most amazing doctor....

Genuinely I can say I think we are all luckly to be seeing the greatest athlectic talent who ever lived. Amazing.
^^this^^

The man is amazing, he'll break the record again, probably smash the 200m record as well. The best athlete alive today, and possibly the best ever, the way he dominates his sport is astonishing

Yeah - this makes me think/beleive it is a genuine talent rather than artificial assistance :). He must get tested so often and even more so now.

It is a bit wrong that someone can travel close on 30mph on nothing but shoes

It is quite scary - I just love the way he flows when he runs. Someone commented last night on the telly saying "He just loves to run" and though it sounds like a trite, obvious comment I think it kind of sums up his style so well - it comes across as 20% effort and 80% pure joy as if he just really loves what he is doing.

I don't think that Bolt is any more likely than any other athlete to be using drugs. Less so, actually, since it seems that his speed differential comes more from style than from strength.

Nevertheless, to say that he isn't taking anything just because he is testing clean is really to not understand the nature of doping in modern sport. All it means is that there isn't yet a test to prove that he is taking anything. This is why they now freeze the samples and retest them as and when new tests become available. Just this year, an Olympic champion was retrospectively stripped of their title because a brand new test revealed that they had been cheating after all.

Anyone who follows Athletics closely will kow that bolt has worked his way up via the world youth championships etc.

it's safe to assume he doesn't take drugs, he was world youth record holder etc etc. IYSWIM

Yep, I think people like me - who kind of follow athletics intermitantly - can forget that most of the althletes who appear to come from nowhere have a much longer pedigree :)

Roll on the 200m!!

This. Bolt runs so fast becuase he has the best technique as well as physical prowess of any sprinter that has gone before.

I just watched the race again, it's hard to believe to be honest. I was stood on the start line at the Berlin marathon when Haille Gebreselassie broke the world marathon record in 2008, saw him disapear off into the distance. I remember watching Carl Lewis and Micahel Johnson when I was younger. Even watching Maradonna play football, or Zidane. I've see Lance Armstrong cycling up close, nothing compares.

Truly the greatest sporting performance I've ever seen or expect to see.

Except for watching Bakele, of course.

That 10k race last night was awesomeness personified. Tadesse did everything possible, winding it up and up and up. And still Bakele left him for dust on the last lap. The guy is superhuman.

Yeah Bakele is incredible that is for sure. His current WR for 10,000 is truly astounding. WIll be interesting as he begins to step up to do more marathons...then I think Haille's marathon WR could be under threat.

101 Races

Forget Bolt vs. Gay. How about Bolt vs. Bakele?

101 races over 101 days. 100 lots of 100m. And then a single 10km race to finish. Cumulative time wins.

Who's your money on? Personally, I don't think it would even be close.

Of course not, but you can't compare! We could do the same test over a half marathon distance and I'd be Bolt I am certain of that!

200 lots of 100m and then one 20km race? My money would be even more on Bakele than the 10km version.

I reckon the crossover point is closer to a 5km race.

Sorry no it was a typo...It should have read, 'I would beat Bolt'....certain I would...you can't compare basically they might was well be entirely different sports.

Let's say he is 1.5 seconds slower than Bolt. So over 1500m, Bolt would have a lead of 22.5 seconds.

Nope, I still think Bakele would actually win over 1500m with Bolt given a 22.5s head start. Even though it isn't Bakele's distance.

Blimey, where IS the crossover? 800m with a 12 second head start? Somewhere in between?

cumulative time wins would blates favour bakele. 1 or 2 seconds between runners is a huge margin in 100 m but fuck all in long distance.

You would have to make each 0.2 second in 100m equal to say one second in 5k for bolt to stand a chance.

Yeah I reckon, in fact the more I think about the more I reckon I would beat Bolt over 10k, or get close on this test....

Ha! I just typed "Bakele 100m" into Google to try to find out and this very thread came out top of the list!
