US: Wal-Mart employee killed by stampeding bargain hunters

i am indian and yes, i have lived there

have you ever seen sick and naked poor beggars all coverd in filth just laying all about? i have...it'll change your perspective on life

oh yeah and the homeless orphans going around asking for a bite to eat??

I saw lepers in Calcutta I did. This is a bit tasteless really though.

...in this particular case they trampled a worker to death, because they couldn't fucking queue in an orderly fashion and where determined to beat everyone else to the bargains...
So you think 5000 people can spontaneously self-organise themselves into an 'orderly queue'?

Have a look at all the staffing and barriers used at large public events - proactive crowd control is essential for safe events and the people with the power and resources to set this up beforehand have to take 99% of the responsibility for preventing accidents.

Events should be set up so that even if some utter fuckwits turn up there *still* won't be a disaster.

There is a reason why events spend time and money on stuff like this:

...I'm not buying _floats_ orderly queue's from shit poor times and places...
I never argued orderly queues exist in poor places or anything remotely similar.

I said that rich people hardly ever stand in queues.

...whether it's a VIP/Business lounge at the airport or entertainment event, exclusive "viewing by appointment only" shops or simply because the prices (and doorstaff) mean most people can't buy or even get in somewhere.

You were lambasting 'consumer drones' and I was arguing that the real 'consumer drones' bimble around muzac-filled shopping malls eating ice-cream and staring at the window displays.

there's been many a study on crowd psychology and the weird dynamics that go on within stressed crowds. None of them can excuse the the stampede crushes of frenzied crowds in this case. Except fear of death obv, a gunman or a fire or whatever.

in this particular case they trampled a worker to death, because they couldn't fucking queue in an orderly fashion and where determined to beat everyone else to the bargains. The desire to win and fuck everyone else as you are chasing to get one over is not an attractive one. I'm not buying _floats_ orderly queue's from shit poor times and places, this was a pure and simple trampling of a man buy a load of ham-footed twats.

But becoming part of the mass-mind that is a crowd will make an unthinking unit with a limited understanding of its overall circumstances of anyone. I don't want to defend these people though so I'll say no more than that.

Or maybe it's because this thread followed the posting rules and was given a meaningful title that properly explained the topic and was posted in the correct forum to ensure that people could find it?

Thanks ever so much for being arsed. :)

This whole thing disgusts me and Walmart scares me on a normal day. I've been almost run over with a car, been knocked into with a cart accompanied by a cheery "Get out of my way!", and bloodied by a forklift. For some reason Walmart encourages that kind of frenzy, I suspect purposefully so. I've refused to go anywhere near for years.
