a surprisingly interesting article in the current issue of 'special warfare' about revising the 'pyramid of resistance' they use as a model to understand insurgencies:

they've been using this since 1963, and as people here will recognise it doesn't seem to entirely chime with the progression of a social movement or insurgency towards revolution. Anyway, a 17 page article about the shortcomings of this model and a suggested revision. worth a read, i think, at least to see moves towards revolution through a hostile analysis.

which completely misses the point that none of that shit is going to get very far if the central government is at least mediocre.

the troubles compared to most long running insurgency's was a quiet year.
nobody disappeared by the state no mass graves and or burned out villages (probably because its always raining:hmm:) etc etc.

  8. I read though a couple of issues of that terrible journal after this post- they dont really get it do they ? The pyramid above seems only to reflect US experience rather than a take on insurgency that includes a series of actions in places where they US have not got involved. Some of the turgid mangement speak in the OP referenced article in awful, absolutely awful
