US Muslim chops off wife's head

What about the "8 year old shoots father, gun control is bad" threads? Everyone seemed to jump on board and agree there but a little snippet of culture here and suddenly the OP has a secret agenda? :hmm:

Ah but middle class liberals are allowed to generalise about American culture, but if you criticise a specific element of Islamic culture, which isn't even mainstream, then you're a racist...

It's Tom's usual pathetic attempt at stirring up anti-islamic feelings!

Can't say I've noticed TomUS bashing the Muselmans before.

Either way, if it IS linked to an honour killing then of course it's linked to Islamic belief.

Albeit an utterly backward version of it.

Perfectly valid points being made about a shit-stinking religion that attracts more executable, violent fundie fucks than any other shit-stinking relgion.

I hadn't noticed anything of that kind either.

Even so, only someone lacking in mental faculties would think that this one example means that every Muslim is the same.

Well quite.

Islam is as fucked up as any other flying spaghetti-monster belief that encourages murdering a spouse.

Though I can't think of many others.

Interesting how Christianity's grossest excesses faded away once economic and social stability came to most of europe.

Can't divorce the society from the religion imo. They are subtly and grossly interlinked.

If you want to examine what makes either of these stories a story, try to put aside your personal reaction and imagine you're an editor who's got to sell papers. Then change certain elements of the story and think about what page to put it on.

In the case of the murder, if the guy is an ordinary muslim who's not the founder of an 'america-ought-to-like-muslims' TV station, it's a local story. Not of interest to CNN or Fox or us unless it's a very slow news day. But it's a big story in his local area.

If he's an ordinary muslim and he shot her it's barely a story at all. The beheading has a huge yuck factor and echoes all those big stories about kidnappings by muslim extremists in Iraq.

If he had been a christian who founded a TV station to improve the image of christians in the US, would the story be huge? I think so - possibly bigger. The press just loves fallen TV evangelists.

So the big elements of the story are (a) the guy being a self-appointed moral leader on TV and (b) the gruesome murder method. The Muslim angles (war on terror, honour killing etc.) are interesting, but any major religion would make headlines.

In the case of the suicide, put it in a mosque or a synagogue and it's just as big a story. Take away the suicide-prevention programme and it's not nearly so big. So it doesn't matter which religion it is (unless you're a bigot about such things.) The story is in the irony.

Any religious ideals that have the basic tenet of stoning your wife to death for percieved wrongs are fucked up, and do not belong in a modern society, IMO.

That includes, though not exclusively, Islam.

Call me a bigot all you want, but to live in a progressive society means dropping mediaeval belief systems that consider such brutality in the name of your god as perfectly reasonable, and chilling the fuck out.

Either that - or fuck off back to Riyadh or wherever.

:)

Yes, it does.

You have so entirely missed the point that you're not even getting sloppy sex.

Please read posts 50 and 75. I'm not explaining it again.

He had some pretty fucked up (or "traditional") ideas about women, by the sounds of it...

nj.com said:
Acquaintances said Mo Hassan was not overtly religious — co-workers did not see him pray, for instance. But he seemed to adhere to many traditional practices.

Nancy Sanders, the television station's news director for 2 1/2 years, remembers him asking her to move her feet during her job interview so he would not see her legs. She was wearing a skirt and stockings.

He also would not let women enter his office unless his wife was there, and he blocked the station from airing a story about the first Muslim woman to win the title of Miss England in 2005, Sanders said.

Acquaintances said Aasiya Hassan was trained as an architect. Sanders described her as obedient to her husband, and that she wore a traditional hijab for a time but later stopped without explanation.
