US inequality

Did you think that up all by yourself?

The newbies fit right in to the circle jerk, like they were born to it.....

That must be a national trait or something.

You worry about Your pathtic and poor country.

Scrape away the veneer of modernity and the US is another third world country as Hurricane Katrina has shown us.

What is your motto? "Kill the poor" is it?

Erm. I'm a global citizen. I don't believe in passports. All the land we stand on is only ours on loan. So your worries are my worries. Which is why I believe the UN should act, move an international force into the US for three reasons:

1/ To search for and destroy all the WMDs there.
2/ To uncover all exisitng political and corporate corruption
3/ To lead the relief effort for New Orleans and environs, as your lot seem congenitally unable to get their act together.

By the way, boy, if you had an real testicular fortitude, you'd be on the way down there (to New Orleans) to help.

But I wouldn't expect you to admit that here.

There is no US 'arse', only ass.

Oh, I've met plenty of US arses, fortunately, I have met many more from the US who just think the arses are asses. Fortunately the arses are a minority, usually (but not exclusively) in the upper, rich percentiles (see previous chart).

Is it the 'thinking' bit, or the 'yourself' bit, or even the "think for yourself" bit you find challenging?

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Desorata, right?

Memorized that as a kid and used to quote "even the dull and ignorant have their story" at my sister. :D

Don't see that around much any more - kinda sad.

TV side effects

if you are poor in a rich society you can often feel worse about, especially if the gap is vaste. If the rich also dying from the same hideous dieases etc - Black death for instance - tend to resent them less
I suspect TV has a lot to answer for, prior to all the glitzy mindless gits on TV it was impossible for the average person to have much of a clue what massive wealth really looked like.
"Every day when I turn on the TV,
They show New Kingston, Uptown, Half Way Tree,
But in the Ghetto man is pure poverty,
The youth is the future of our county,
But they nah do nothin for the future a we,
Them just build more jail and penitentiary"
Supercat, Cry for the Youth

My Mum used to say that "There's always someone worse off than you"
Interesting on the level of the mind, hard to get to speak to the emotion tho

US fails in Iraq, fails in New Orleans

"The US went into Iraq to "save it" and now can barely save itself. The gross incompetence of the Bush Administration should be readily apparent except for the most diehard apologists. We now must ask ourselves, isn't the U.S. a failed state?"

Is that an argument to take the US out of Iraq, then?

No i'm reminding you that, you don't like it when i tell you what to do in your country.

Or are you a hypocrite?

I'm not sure if the USA is a "failed state" but it most certainly is a dysfunctional one. The image it projects to the world is a mere illusion. Katrina has exposed America's dirty secret to the rest of the world. Its moral authority hangs by a thread.

Well. I have to admit that I wasn't aware of just how much evidence of the inequality of wealth and opportunity available in the US would come to light in recent days.

I think we all now know a little more about the plight of the poor in the 'Land of the free' (market).

Now a new UN report confirms the crass nature of US wealth distribution, finding that parts of the US are as poor as the Third World.

So I guess that may be something that needs addressing, America. And not just poverty in the US, but why do we still have any poverty at all after thousands of years of human evolution?

Is this really the best we are capable of achieving?

UN report in Indepemndent

Colin Powell, a former US Secretary of State, condemns the reaction to Hurrican Katrina and confirms the economic inequality in the country.

"Poverty disproportionately affects African-Americans in this country. And it happened because they were poor," he said.

Colin Powell lashes out
