US condemns China 'space weapon' - hypocrites

laptop said:

The several generations of field communications devices (from handhelds all the way to man-packs and vehicle-mounted) that got superseded by digital comms.

Given the enthusiasm with which the DoD auctions off "surplus" kit, the Yanks may have already flogged off their fall-back comms gear. :)

Remember, these are the same guys who laughed at the Sov-bloc's use of valve-based comms gear in the modern era, right up until they realised it was more proof against EMP weapons than their own IC-based tech, so they have a history for being a bit "blind" where comms-tech is concerned. :)

Thanks ViolentPanda. I dare say that the US military have backups. Either that or we'll see more money diverted from the reconstruction of Iraq.

Great post Jessiedog. I wonder if Taiwan, and other East Asian countries, have many Geosynchronous Satellites? I must remember that the Chinese governments overriding priority is National Unity. That Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province.

Interesting little note I lifted from the end of the main article on the front page of today's SCMP.

Jin Canrong , a mainland expert on Sino-US relations, said the missile test signalled an advancement of China's military technology in space. But China had no intention of challenging the US, he said, suggesting the test was more of a warning to Taiwan.

And Harry, as always, is on great form..............................

The Air Force chief of staff has approved the latest revision to Air Force Doctrine Document 2-2, Space Operations, outlining the operations of space power.

<snip>

This space operations doctrine has been updated significantly since the previous publication of AFDD 2-2 in 2001. It describes the integration of space power across the range of military operations.

Specifically, it recommends a command and control construct for space operations found to be extremely effective in recent operations.
