US- 200 million Male chicks thrown live into a grinder every year

People feel sorry for things they see as cute.

Pigs don't get the same sympathy.

Male pigs are useful - they don't get slaughtered as piglets. Unless they are ill or something, of course. They get slaughtered after they have gained enough weight to make them profitable.

there's a fair bit of slurry in that video

I didn't see the video - slow internet speed and I don't open "blood-and-gore" stuff.

I did watch an hour long doc on the telly about it though.

The slurry -> was it bits of birds and shells that sorta resembled poorly-formed poop? That's what it looked like on the show I watched.

Vegan diets are so boring and time consuming though and you get grey skin and are all wan with no energy and a funny smell about you and less sexual stamina that is if you can actually find a partner who will tolerate your chosen lifestyle and diet. ;)

It's all true :(

That's even more waffle-some than your original statement. What precisely do you mean by 'respect' in this context?

everything that is alive, deserves to be left that way. If, somehow, we could learn to live like that (yes it means we all go vegan, not something that I am right now) then we could get back in touch with how things should be. We're a clever breed at heart, and it's not outside the realms of possibilities. Yes, it's dream land stuff, but I'd love it, and it'd take the weight of being a human off of me. Becasue to be quite frank, sometimes i am ashamed to be so.

We do not have the right to do the things we do, and one day it's going to change. Because it has to. We can't go on like this. It's not right. And I know that change has to start at home and shit, but we've all got settled into this way of life. It will take nothing less than a miricle to change it.

I think I can confidently contradict all those statements - except the finding a partner bit :p

;)

I'd love to be vegan. I know that if I had to kill my own meat, I would be. Cos i don't have it in me to kill stuff. I still feel guilty cos when I was 17, i chucked a lady bird on a hotplate :(

But every time you step on the ground you are ending several lives.

It's completely impossible to live without killing anything.

And "we do not have the right to do the things we do": who says? Who hands out or denies those rights?

I heard that chickens lack the brain capacity to comprehend things like pain so shredders and battery farms aren't that much of a big deal to them? Any truth in that?

Chucking a living thing into a grinder cos it has no monetary use? :hmm: even as a meat eater I find that pretty fucked.
they have to kill them somehow and that's as good as any. you didn't think they retired the chicks and let them live out their days in bliss did you?

The only vegan I know is ridiculously healthy, has glowing skin, and is rampant...

It's simple, we all just need to learn to levitate

Ok yes, we can't all be mother teresa and shit, but to think that it's just fine to kill things becasue they're useless, is the height of human arrogance.

I'm vegan and have a tendency to have too red rather than too grey skin! Can be quite embarassing at times and i can't sit out in in the sun for long without a hat. Feel pretty healthy on the whole, in fact healthier since going vegan.

It doesn't sicken me either. I'm even now planning a chicken dinner for Sunday. And I will wake up tomorrow to eggs and sausage just like every Saturday. I'm a meat eater. Always will be. And regardless of the topic I will not be guilted into accepting something that just isn't me. Hoorah for the vegans. Hope their happy. I'll have my two inch thick prime rib rare thank you. And with as free a conscience as them.

Time has a piece on this type of stuff also http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1917458,00.html

I've only skimmed it though. I'll read more later.

I do :(

Humans are cunts

One day we'll all live in harmony with nature (I hope)

A friend told me the story after she'd been at a shoot, they were rounding up the chicks to go off to the freezer, when she said nooooooooo...found a place for them to go and live instead, which also cost her a fortune to send them off in a taxi to the little farm to live out their days.

After yet another shoot, she called the little farm who now refused to take the chicks as the last lot were male, had started fighting with one another, and in the end they'd had to put them in their freezer to kill them

What a waste of taxi fare

Over here, the film/tv industry has all sorts of animal cruelty laws.

How are we going to get all those animals, fish, birds, insects etc, to stop eating each other?

Put them in a fur lined box, where the sides slowly come in. It will start out as a hug, but end as a hug that got too hard.

They'll be hugged to death. :)

Fair enough. That said, it's just the double standards... In China, they'd never do something like that. They kill one pig, eat every part of it...
