Urgent-ish birthday present recommendation

how about just spending some time with her, probably mean more than tat that she'd have bought for herself if she'd wanted it.

Erm, I will be doing that as well but a suitable present would be, erm, nice. I usually manage to get a nice little book but this year I'm struggling.

I take your point about shit presents just for the sake of it. I was looking in Boots yesterday, and they have Xmas gifts like extendable devices for getting your golf ball out of lakes.

no one suggested alcohol yet

Doesn't really drink but she has the very occasion glass of Guinness -- I have got her four bottles -- this is my sole purchase so far!

I was hoping that there was some popular little natural history book like "How to be a bad birdwatcher" that was new, but having looked at every single book in Borders, I couldn't come up with anything.

She's an old woman - she doesn't want a bleeding brain trainer!
My missus old mum wanted a DS brain trainer game. She said that she was going to buy one as she'd seen them advertised for £20. We gently explained that you also needed the console.

"Oh no you don't" she said, "the advert said you can buy a brain trainer for £20, that's what I want and that's what I'm going to get" :D

Is she able to move about much in the house? Instead of going for bird type things, you could get her a slow cooker. Or a really cosy fluffy rug.

I bought my b/f one. Needed nothing other than what he held in his hand.

It's not a very exciting one though. Mainly maths problems

You said you could get to an RSPB shop? If so, why not try to get a copy of this?

The Secret Lives of Garden Birds - A beautifully written book that gives insight into the intricate and often intriguing lives of garden birds.

Thanks. I don't know about those. Maybe I will buy the entire stock of my local Woolworth's for £1 and let her choose.

if she likes cooking (especially stews), then a slow-cooker would be a great present, especially considering the price of electricity and gas

Why can't you get it from WH Smiths?

The web site says availability is in 1-2 weeks, which makes me think it's something that only bigger branches will have. My local W H Smith is pretty small! This isn't yer actual London you know. However, I do have an RSPB shop that has quite a few books, and the book is published by the RSPB, so it's more likely.

She hates cooking and doesn't seem to like food much! She used to say that she wished they would invent food in pill form to avoid the hassle.

Sorry, this is sort of my problem. Those tricky relatives. And I have asked her what she wants.

I could give you a list of several hundred things I would like.

Ha ha. Yes! If my RSPB shop has this, it will be good. If not, it'll be a Christmas present.
