There was a Linux app I used a few months ago that was able to successfully detect and restore the old partitions of a hard drive that had been accidentally reformatted, and I managed to get about 90% of the data off more-or-less unscathed. Can't remember what it was called though...
Have to agree with what Crispy said though. Nothing kills data faster than someone using data recovery software incorrectly
