Urban's greated album of all time.........ever!

...Dub? ...bloody hell! ...you can't just ask rhetorical questions then fart off, you know!! !1!!

that reminds me, had a super-bizarre dream in which you were some sort of referee in a mexican wrestling match...
with mariachi bands deafening the noise from a more-than-agitated crowd...
i ended up crushed beneath the feet of a Lucha Libre dude because you and your friends pushed me out into the ring and the mariachi dudes made me a special song as i twitched in merry death-haze cramps...

that's a great fucking dream :D

i always wondered why they were having thai cockfights in the same ring as the wrestlers stomped around...
strangely the roosters didn't get crushed 'tween the wrestlers at all, and there were lots of thai chefs and bandidos scratching their greasy scalps and waving dollar bills amid vocal arguments...

Without thinking about it too hard and driving myself mental, I'd say:

1. Leftfield - Leftism
2. Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
3. Black Grape - It's Great When You're Straight Yeah!
4. Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
6. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
7. Fatboy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry
8. The Slackers - Redlight
9. KRS-One - Return of the Boom Bap
10. Terrorvision - How to Make Friends and Influence People

If mix albums were allowed, Prodigy - Dirtchamber Sessions, and Coldcut - Journeys By DJ would be in there.

10 is too hard though

Hmmm....

1. Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
2. McCarthy - I Am A Wallet
3. Godspeed - Lift yr. skinny fists
4. KLF - Chill Out
5. Vex'd - Degenerate
6. Autechre - Amber
7. Deadbeat - Something borrowed, something blue
8. Future Sound of London - Dead Cities
9. Venetian Snares - Rossz scillag alatt szueletet
10. Burning Spear - Fire Down Below

*list subject to change

right.. lots of caveats - there's no soul or reggae in this list, because these aren't primarily albums-based music. If I'd included compilations, it would have the Stax/Volt singles boxed set, perhaps Lee Perry's Arkology or any number of other great reggae collections. But I've tried to stick to 'proper' albums.

1 Sparklehorse Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
2 Van Morrison Astral Weeks
3 Neutral Milk Hotel In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
4 Leatherface Mush
5 Low Things We Lost In The Fire
6 Thin Lizzy Live & Dangerous
7 The Smiths The Queen Is Dead
8 The Flaming Lips Clouds Taste Metallic
9 Shellac 1000 Hurts
10 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Henry's Dream

These are all albums I've played constantly since I got them (in Van's case, for more than a quarter of a century  ) and while other artists drift in and out - Joanna Newsom is a recent contender for Milk Eyed Mender, for example - they haven't quite taken up permanent residence yet.

picking a Nick Cave album was REALLY hard

Oooooo Yuk!!!!!!

BB:p :D

The idea of "greatest" or "classic" in an industry that thrives on transience is of course ridiculous. Still, that's not going to stop me contributing:

Jacques Brel - Grand Jacques (compilation)
Roy Orbison - In Dreams (compilation)
Kraftwerk - Autobahn (German version)
Delroy Wilson - Cool Operator (compilation)
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
Ramones - Ramones
The Handsome Family - Through the Trees
Johnny Dowd - The Pawnbroker's Wife
Euros Childs - Chops
Gruff Rhys - Candylion

Call that music?

That is all. As you were. :p

that's largely incorrect. The industry doesn't thrive on transience anywhere near as much as it once did. As '£50 man' and other daft demographic groups play a larger and larger part in record sales, the whole greatest / classic canon is increasingly used as a marketing tool. Look at the amount of box sets, the amount of magazines dedicated to endless hagiographies about long dead or defunct 'heritage' acts.

So not that ridiculous, really

I feel you have to have a contemporary musical passion otherwise you are just mr saddo playing old records...:)

It wasn't a criticism, it was applause. I love Gruff's music! :)

Oh I know the marketing of "classic" is rife. But it's still a nonsense to me. I hate people who harp on about "classic" in an industry that's barely a hundred years old. Culturally that's not even a blink of the eye.

Personally I was quite dissapointed by it compared to 'one part lullaby' - was suprised to see it someone's Top 10.

A few people have said that to me before. I think I just fell in love with it as I saw them at ULU when they were touring the album and it totally blew me away.

I saw them at Dingwalls to a quarter empty room and was under-whelmed - sounds like I picked the wrong gig!

I found the beats/production angle Mr Barlow was taking The Folk Implosion on 'one part lullaby' really interesting and was eager to see how he developed it. When he didn't and instead seemed to create Sebadoh V.2 I wasn't very happy.

8 out of those 10 are pretty much entirely instrumental, aside from short samples

what does that say about me?

Woo!

Finally. Out of all these lists of obscure bands that I have never heard of, not only one I know but really like too!

Couldn't put them in order sorry:

Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Radiohead - OK Computer
Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
British Sea Power - The decline of British Sea Power
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Ramones - Ramones
The Clash - London Calling

I wanted to put in 50,00 fall fans can't be wrong by the The Fall but it's a but silly seeing that it's a best of album. Kind of Blue by Miles Davis nearly made it on the list.
