Urban75's favourite film

Personally usually I would include the Lord of the Rings trilogy as a good candidate, but this place appears to be full of iconoclasts who hate it (in contrast to real life) so it's not a goer

Indeed. It's depressing that he's mostly known in the west for Battle Royale.

Well, Battle Royale is kinda his traditional forte - the "stern clown" type of thing (IIRC he made his name in Japan by clowning around), and there's always been some element of comedy to every film of his I've seen (with the exception of Johnny Mnemonic). There's a little of that in Hana Bi, but as you say the film is infinitely more subtle than that. Not a film for everyone - but definitely alot more palatable to most than Fight Club for example (although it does contain a goodly amount of fairly graphic violence).

P.S. to you poor people who have yet to see this masterpiece, it's the story of a policeman who robs a bank in order to pay for one last holiday with his dying wife, and is fairly thin on dialogue if you're not into subtitles - most of the story is explained with imagery.

But how the hell are we going to have an "Urban's most popular film" poll? Are we going to have subsequent polls/heats based on this thread until we arrive at a winner?

Is someone feeeling a little grumpy wumpy?

No, I am merely highlighting the inadequacy of a policy in which one person disliking a film/band/book invalidates it as an option.

Just total up whos suggested what and vote between the top suggestions.

Not sure yet, will think about it. Downloading Hana Bi since it keeps being mentioned.

I think you've been spending to much time with butchersapron. ;)

So are we saying that a massive majority of say 90+ % is what consititutes an Urban classic?

Out of that list I couldn't decide against NBK or Usual Suspects. And I'm shocked no Sergio Leone films are in there. Did no one like Once Upon a Time in America. And talking of gangster films what about Casino and Goodfellas? Or Scarface?

Oh... you've got me going now. I'll never decide.

They all sound like shit taglines! ;)

well, I'm not sure how well known all those films are on the boards in general - but out of the posters I know who have spoken about them their comments have been uniformly positive.

I thought Fight Club was shit.

Goodfellas is my favourite, but I doubt that many would agree with me. If you want edgy foreign language, I'd say La Haine.

Whats not to like about Top Gun though? Eh? Why can't it be urbans favourite??

Just waitng for the squabbling geeks to turn up and argue who mentioned Idi I Smotri on U75 first.

he was originally the "boke" or idiot in the the manzai comedy duo "Two Beat" (as Beat Takeshi) but his work on that was very silly and often rather risque and ever since that disolved all the movie roles have been rather serious ... with all his humour being far darker .... though i wonder if the harisen (paper fan) as a weapon in battle royal was a reference to him staring in it (as it's used in manzai) or just used because it is often used as a joke weapon (in anime at least)
