I reckon the Clash are shite too.

I vote for The Flaming Lips, Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor

And another one for The Pixies.

But 3 out of those four bands wouldn't have existed without The Clash so what do you know?

I really hate the "if it wasn't for so-and-so" argument...

So - like - whatever.

Cameo

the band that actually reminds me of urban is that Country band - what they called again?

Don't they live in Brixton or somink?

I just dont understand how someone could like Mogwai and The Pixies and not like The Clash. But horses for courses and all that :)

erm, i love the Clash, but entirely fail to see their direct influence in any of the four bands you claim for them.

but what do i know, eh?

that's not the same argument as your previous one, is it?

Well, the KLF springs to mind - a thread about them always gets a good response. Maybe Primal Scream... they seem to have the right attitude and music catalogue to make it to the top or the top five at least.

Ok then so far we've got:

Kraftwerk
Public Enemy
Flaming Lips
The Broken Family Band
Mogwai
The Fall
Massive Attack
Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Rules are if someone think they're shit - then they're not allowed in...

For example - I reckon Primal Scream are pony. So they don't get in.

Poll to follow (at some point).

What the fuck are the Flaming Lips or the Broken Family Band doing in there.. There's afew people on here who like them alot. But they're not generally praised.

Actullay akira.. you're entire list is rubbish.

true, & without primal scream they'd be no stone roses. Innit.

Well to be honest Magneze, I would have mentioned it ages ago. You'll just end up with the usual philistines or people lacking a modicum of taste in music sounding off again.. ;)

Well. go for most of those apart from the Broken Family Band and Goodsped You! Black Emporium....

Are we talking about the same Primal Scream here? As in Screamadelica? As in Xtrmntr? Surely this man is thinking of somebody else....

Ok - Mogwai have referenced The Clash as a major influence. The Pixies formed partly because Frank Black was a massive Clash fan (read it recently in some interview he gave), Godspeed played at the Joe Strummer Remembrance day organised by Attila in Brighton last year (excellent btw) and onstage the singer did a big speech about the influence The clash had on him when he was starting the band. The Flaming Lips dont sound anything like The Clash or as far as I know have never referenced them.

3 out of 4, ok?

I would suggest the Pixies.. you never seem to get anyone around here saying they're crap.

not crap but certainly not my fave - so many other bands of the era from sonic youth via dinosaur jr to archers of loaf that i much prefer

erm, i hear nothing from the clash in mogwai or Godspeed. they may have influenced members to be in bands etc, but that's not the same as the clash actually affecting their sound, as you implied.

Without wanting to go all pseuds corner, the whole point about why the Clash are the greatest band of all time is there whole attitude, passion, contradictions, politics as well as the music. That's why Mogwai would reference them. My point was that those bands wouldnt have existed without The Clash not they sound like them. Anyway is this becoming my first ever thread derail?
