Double digging - it's the double-dropping of gardening man....

I'm still rushing off it.

i have got to come one time soon. sounds like a proper natural kick maann!!

there was a man who did not approve of the fact we were doing double digging. He was mocking us I feel. I felt like I was doing something really out of date :( Wearing the gardening equivalent of flares or something

I don't know what's good or bad!!

I think sometimes it can be unnecessary if you're soils ok, but it's not bad... at least you'll keep fit, and you'll have well dug beds, which in theory won't need as much work on in the autumn/next year :)

ok :)

He said it wasn't good to aerate the soil too much and that the worms would do what we were doing and that we should really be putting compost in if we were going to do that.

I felt very out of depth :o

Hmmm
I wouldn't have thought that you'd areate it too much by digging it over once. It depends on what your soils like though.
I think he may be right about putting compost/rotted manure in as you go though... but I'm no expert :) Perhaps spreading manure over the surface and letting the worms bring it into your nice soft soil may work just as well. But again, it depends on what the soils like. If it already has plenty of organic matter in it you may be ok just feeding it.
:)

If you gather ten gardeners together you'll get eleven opinions about the right way to do things.

erm - she claimed drainage - it is quite clayey soil. Also loosening the deeper soil so roots like carrots could grow without mutating into frankenveg. Other than that I have no idea....

I was told to do it - she is the one who knows about stuff so I did it :D
