Urban75 Album of the Year 1990

One of the early casualties of the coronavirus lockdown was the cancellation of the Dead C residency at Cafe Oto, which many people in my orbit were getting super excited about.

This is their album from 1990, Trapdoor Fucking Exit, which is ultra-low-fi noise rock recorded in a bucket. Pretty good.

Oh yeah, breakbeat business!

This is a fucking great year guys. This kiwi post-punk album is fantastic - Peter Jefferies. ' Kinda like John Cale vs Wire ' according to someone on ratemymusic. fair enough description.

Fernanda Abreu's SLA Radical Dance Disco Club is everything the title suggests it is - infectious brazilian electro-funk pop music.

Terminal Cheesecake's Angels in Pigtails - low slung super heavy psychedelic rock music

Ruins' Stonehenge - weird time signatures, fast changes, sometimes hectic and heavy, sometimes groovy as fuck, all in the same song.

Frederic Rzewski released an album of him playing his greatest work The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, 36 Piano variations on the Chilean rebel anthem El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido. This video isn't the same performance I don't think, but I don't imagine it'll be much different.

A few from my not filtered list. All were massive in their own right I was 20, I had wide, varied and eclectic tastes.

Sinead O'Connor - I do not want what I Haven't Got
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss
Ride - Nowhere
Enigma - MCMXC
Carter USM - 101 Damnations
Ween - godweensatan
Pixies - Bossanova
Dread Zeppelin - Un Led Ed
Depeche Mode - Violator
Sonic Youth - Goo
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Buffalo Tom - Birdbrain
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Extreme - Pornograffiti

This is literally just a peek of my record collection in 1990 and I've not included any mentioned above, nor searched out for any of my more unusual records. Each of the above bought something new to the table in some way.

And if you don't like, what I'm saying, get the funk out

This is the US release of their 1989 album.

The only 1990 808 State album was:

This is the Polish cassette release of his 1989 album.

His 1990 album was the much poppier:

Which gave him his massive hit:

Kalima - ex Swamp Children who produced some interesting jazz/Latin stuff including 1990s album Feeling Fine, a good all round consistent album if you like that genre. . At one time had half of A Certain Ration playing with them. Very much against the stream of music in Manchester and ended up moving to London to join the acid dance scene.

I was surprised to find the Candyflip album (them of Strawberry Fields fame) was mostly quite favourably reviewed, so I checked it out - it's actually pretty good - kind of like the Pet Shop Boys on E. Skip the shit beatles cover tho (track 2)

If The Big Lebowski was a stoners version of Raymond Chandlers Big Sleep then its musical equivalent would have been Dread Zepplins valiant interpretation of Led Zepplin's catalogue on their album Un-Led-Ed. Elvis sings cod reggae versions of classic's like Your Time Is Going To Come. Coulda been a contender.
