12 The Congos - Heart of the Congos

Technically a slightly dubious entry, as the version you voted for almost definitely wasn't the one originally released in '77. Still, wtf, it's a bloody classic.

An instant pop classic replete with songs of love, joy and dancing barefoot on the grass. Or possibly not.

10 - The Ramones - Rocket to Russia

Hey ho, lets go quite a long way based entirely on leather jackets and heroin. And some damned good songs.

The USA's answer to Wire, reaching unrepeatable heights. It made punk look old and tired even while it was still in nappies.

8 Iggy Pop - Lust for Life

Here comes Iggy Pop again, with his liquor and shit eating grin. Let's not analyse the lyrics to Sixteen.

    7 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Thank god for that. Apparently this was a popular piece of recorded music in the year 1977. Why? I have absolutely no idea.

Actually, I'm not totally certain what the 6th album is - I've got Bowie, Bowie, Sex Pistols, Clash and Kraftwerk. Who's the other one?

If you can put Chrome's Alien Soundtracks in at number 1 and disappear the Clash from the top 5, then I'll stick £500 in the server fund.

    In that case, I predict:

    5. Kraftwerk
    4. Clash
    3. Heroes
    2. Pistols
    1. Low

It's all a bit expected really. I was hoping for some surprises.

5 The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks

Shall I say something outrageous? This wasn't the most important (punk) album of the year.

Is there anything left to be said about this? Krautrock inspired genius.

3 The Clash - The Clash

No Elvis, Beatles or Rolling Stones. No Clash at Number 1 either, even though they were at 11pm last night. Still a pretty damned good album.

    1 David Bowie - Low

It's good to know that we do actually know what the best Bowie album (of 1977) is. Who can blame Jasmine for peeping?

The canon is too strong for older years - I expect we might have more surprises if we did, say, 97. Although OK Computer would probably still win.

There was a Nick Cave album, and a David Bowie. But they wouldn't win it. 1957 & 1987 should be less obvious though.

I didn't bother voting in the 67 poll, because I knew it would just be deciding which order some canon albums I don't care too much about came in - an action I regret seeing as the doors made number 1.

Junior Murvin and Punkentelechy only narrowly missed out (assuming that that vote for Junior Marvin isn't referring to an obscure artiste I am unaware of), and AC/DC got the most votes without making it even near the chart. I'd have thought the Damned might do better, but apparently not.
