Urban Gardeners Diary

moving a LOT of stuff out onto the allotment today. then I'll put in a few more experimental plants into the empty pots. there's a few things i got in a big load of old packs from a friend that i can try out now iv'e got the main things i wanted to crop out of the way.

squashes are starting to grow flower buds already.

preparing ground in the greenhouse this week to plant out tomatoes when they are ready.

My squashes are only just coming through.

I put my tomato plants outside for a few hours yesterday while it was nice and sunny, but when I came back later they were all wilted :(

Would the wind have caused this?

Yeah, probably, they'll recover. I just planted mine - pink oxblood and yellow pear - on the balcony this afternoon, it shouldn't get too cold at night now.

Also got cut-'n'-come-again salad leaves on the go, and lettuce, with some chillies looking good.

Herbs-wise, the basil's doing great, got coriander coming through and am keeping a close eye on rosemary from seed, which is challenging.. anyone know how long it takes for the stalk to firm up?

:)

I've started everything a bit late this year, but both types of beans, courgettes and tomatoes are all doing really well and look ready to plant out soon. The other squashes look like they're about to emerge, and the peppers have finally germinated (may have left these too late though, but they will be living in a nice toasty greenhouse). The red cabbage and cavolo nero seeds have germinated amazingly quickly (less than 2 days), which I'm really happy about.

with non-veg I'm very excited about one of the roses I planted last year - Guinee. It's growing really well and is covered in buds, some look like they should be out in the next day or so.

My Guinee is looking excellent too! However, have had an infestation of greenfly which hopefully I have dealt with/am dealing with.

Finally the spring onions have decided to germinate! Took their time, but the little green shoots are showing thru the ground - hurrah!!!!

Am loving the raised beds for the salad stuff and dwarf tomatoes - makes life oh so easy:cool: and pretty much eliminates the slug problem thanks to yards of copper tape around the legs of the beds.

My baby apple tree seems to have some sort of mite....some white furry stuff on some of the leaves......a bit like mealy bug - anyone know whats best to sort it out? never grown a fruit tree before so haven't got a clue what it could be.

Runner beans climbing like Sir Edmund Hillary at the moment

I've been busy with our newly aquired petrol strimmer stimming and tidying up the plot - it's looking the best it ever has, and will look even better if we manage to get our shed up this weekend

Have planted and netted some cabbages and calabrese - a couple of cabbages got munched a bit but nothing too drastic. Planted some beans which don't look too good, but we have plenty more at home hardening off.

Courgettes and pumkins are sprouting nicely. As are the toms, chillis and peppers, and we have 16 sweetcorn and some more brassicas nearly ready to go in.

Have sowed some spinach, lettuces and leaves, spring onions, carrots, parsnips and beetroot - but no action from the yet
