How come? Is it because of the quality of training available or the level it was aimed at?

It was the (lack) of quality of the training. You would go in the morning and spend a couple of hour checking the same local papers and Internet job sites that you had already checked the day before and after that the rest of the day would be spent either reading the Yellow Pages looking for companies to contact or going out cold calling.
A couple of times a week the instructor went through the motions of having a lesson in the afternoon about interview techniques, confidence building, or how to fill out an application form that just left everyone feeling a bit silly. Also, they only had about six weeks worth of lessons planned out, and after that they just repeated them.
Whilst I was on the course I noticed that I was only getting paid 10p per week in unemployment benefits, the rest was made up by what they called a training allowance. Technically, for the three months I was on the course I was not unemployed. I suspect New Deal has more to do with the Government massaging the unemplyoment figures then it has with helping people back into work.

That doesn't even sound like training, just helping you with job hunting. Can you get vocational training if you want it?

We were supposed to spend 3-4 days a week on a work placement. Seven weeks into the course they finally found me a place at the local library for one day a week (I had asked for an administration job), and the rest of the people that started with me they sent down to the local football ground to cut grass, paint fences, etc.

lol still waiting to be friggin paid all mine, signed on 2nd December, apparently can only be paid from the 5th as part of some save us half a weeks jsa policy. Also did housing and council tax benefits at the same time. Then at job centre found the muppet on the phone didnt take the details properly and had to go over nearly everything all over again. Now they've sent me a fucking form asking for exactly the same information Ive already given them twice now.
Either way its been 6 weeks, Ive 3 weeks jsa, no hb or council tax exemption thingy sorted out. Useless wankers.
Theyve also given both me and mate the wrong dates to attend, and made me come back an hour later for my appointment after I only turned up 2 minutes early and the bloody security guard had to deal with me cos the greety person was busy with something, who then denied Id been there before my appointment was due to be called.
