Well it is true. A dog is just a dog. It behaves in a dog way and does dog things. This is why you can't treat it as a human and human psycology doesn't work round a dog.

I totally agree here, it's maddening o hear them try to reason with it.

Don't worry. I'm not critising you, just trying to get you to understand that it is all about YOUR reactions and how you challenge the behaviour. The dog has seen a gap in the pack and taken it. And that is the fualt of a)the owners letting it happen, b) you letting it happen.

I agree with this too, but they always have it on their lap and I am worried that my behaviour is over ruled by theirs.

I'm just saying that you are teh only one that can stop it happening.

I wish I felt that was true, but on the whole I have no contact with it away from its owners and also, tbh, I am scared of being bitten, it does bite.

Don't worry. It does not work this way, dogs do not fight for the affection of the pack leader, they fight to BE pack leader. From what you are describing not only is the dog trying to be your leader - but has already obtained leadership over your landlord. This is why if you overule thier dog - and become it's pack leader - you also become pack leader of the landlords! i like the sound of that!

This is why there will be no such thing as you being overuled by the landlords - because the dog is at the top of the pyramid and rules the lot of yas!

Ah ha! The dog knows you are scared of it - this explains alot which is why I reiforce my above post of not looking at it and "claiming" the territory. There is an old saying that dogs can "smell fear", this isn't exactly true but they are certainly excellent at picking up tiny moves in your body that suggest weakness. You have to not be scared about gettign bitten by it. And not being scared of being bitten is easy. Try this excsie (and close your eyes for effect):

Imagine the puppy. Take a good look at it . Size it up. How big is this dog? Look at it's teeth! how big are they? What is the worst it will do to you? Bite you? Draw blood maybe? Imagine the WORST thing this dog will do to you.

Now imagine the dog were to attack you or try to bite you, how do you react to defend yourself? you could probably push it away with one arm! you could throw it away! you could probably kick it to death if you wanted to!!!!

I will tell you now that puppy bites do not hurt the same way as big dog bites do, and puppy jack russel bites hurt even less. It is a small dog and there is only one of them so there is no need to be afraid of it. And more to the point the dog KNOWS this too - that is a power point to you.

So next time you see the dog, just think of all the TERRIBLE things it could do to you, then thibk of the terrible thigs you could do to it. Who wins?

The dog is thinking the exact same thing. It KNOWS it loses but not showing it. you need to KNOW this too - and show that you know it.
