Urban challenge: Find me a single mag or paper worth reading

National Geographic. It's fucking superb. The photography in glossy print alone makes it worthwhile. I have a subscription.

I used to have subscriptions to the Beano and Shoot, but I cancelled those when I was about 13.

I also once subscribed to Railway Modeller and Tropical Fishkeeper magazines

Here's your real answer:

Amnesty Magazine.

They send it to you free every quarter. All you have to do is become a member of Amnesty International. And joining that is its own reward.

I was going to offer up Prospect, but quimcunx beat me to it. And which you describe as 'arse'

And Nat Geo - altho editorially it displays it's US origins too obviously for me sometimes.

History Today

Foreign Policy review

what do you want to read it for?
current affairs?
lifestyle?
science and technology?

if you're into mining i'd recommend Engineering and Mining Journal.

*warms heart cockles on kabbes' goodness*

Has anyone mentioned 'Pick Me Up' magazine?

Last week they taught me how to save money by turning my coat inside out when it has been worn out.

I subscribe to New York Magazine, although it usually is a month late getting here it is worth a read everytime. Might switch to New Yorker though.

Vice looks like it was the blueprint for SugaRAPE. "You are all fucking idiots!"
Or am I being unkind?

Prospect - had a look and yes it's hardly a cutting critique but arse still stands.

I'm not joking - I don't think there's one out there. Here's my top five nearly rans but why I don't buy anymore:

BBC Wildlife - too pricey for what it is
Private eye - few good stories and 'toons but too media industry-Westminster centric
Idler - was good but too samey
Guardian - drives me up the wall
New Scientist - the weekly podcast is enough for me and I can get most online

There ARE mags and papers I enjoy buying in my other regular base, Brazil. So it's not just that so much is available online. So what's up with England??
gx

Metro, well worth the price. ;)

Anyway I don't read news papers, I've no need of them and consider myself above that sort of thing.

i'll vote for 'the lady', cracking fiction pieces every month.

seriously though (*cough*), i love these kinda threads as i learn about new and interesting things that i'd probably miss out while trying to avoid the tidal wave of crap that's pumped out on a daily basis.

'variant' looks trest interessant, will give it a go and sub :)

Have you had it this quarter? I don't remember seeing one for ages.

Good magazines. Erm.

I read Huffington Post, Politico & Salon online, for the US stuff, for the UK I read New Statesman online, and most of the other political ones I dip in and out of. I can't deal with women's mags at all - I used to get them all free for work for ten years and after ten days you realise they are all the bloody same.

Private Eye is my treat, small and light and fits in my bag and lasts all week when read on tube journeys.
