Urban burning red hot -- compilation fun

Wintermute said:
Yeah but your computer will - and all my stuff is mp3 anyway so there's no sound quality advantage in my burning it to audio, and if we can do it as mp3 then I can get shedloads more stuff on.

Maybe there should be an option when you sign up? Whether you can accept mp3 or not?

tbh i prefer proper compilations, otherwise i might as well just ask someone to burn a shitload of albums for me.

i want to be tantalised, surprised, excited, tickled... not have to wade through loads of stuff i don't necessarily 'get' all by the same artist... and sure, my pooter will play mp3 cds, but it rather limits its practicality...

so put me down for audio cd only

I reckon audio would be better - there's nothing very personal about 200 tracks, but there is about 20.

Also, should there be a theme - might be interesting to hear how people interpret it...?

There was talk of a theme in the summerburn thread. I think the summer theme's a non-starter, then there was my film idea (soundtrack a film, existing or imagined), which I like but I think could be a LOT of work. It might stop people from leaving it to the last minute and digging out one they've already done, tho ;). I dunno.

Theme?

Theme suggestions:

A bad nightmare
A good night out
Cruisin' in yo' fly car
A life in 80 minutes
The four seasons (not the pizza, before anyone says it)
Ummm
Can't think of any more

and I think it makes it all a bit complex if you do anything except audio CD's. If forces someone to pick tracks and put them together in order and put some thought into it rather than just wacking a bunch of mp3's on a CD. Just a thought.

I don't get it...

You make a compilation on CD - anything you like and send it to someone randomly?

I suppose I could re-read the thread.

i should...

you're almost there, but you're missing the evil genius of Mr Martini at the dark heart of the whole enterprise

i think it should be a secret until it's all done and dusted, and the sender shouldn't let the recipients know or anything.

surprises are good...

in fact, it's a shame it would be too much hassle for all the cds to get pooled centrally, so you don't even know who you're making it for.. that would just be way too bureaucratic..

I was thinking about this and if you like people can send me their cd's with the same amount of stamps as they use to send em placed in the envelope, I'll just pick a name out of a hat, reuse their envelope and send em on.

Any good?

Is this a coup d'etat?

:D

bmd's just wanting the pick of the crop for himself... :p

I saw it from the very beginning, but I kept quiet.

He's forgetting one thing. IF THERE'S ANY NAMES BEING PULLED OUT OF A FUCKING HAT, A REAL FUCKING HAT, I WANT TO DO IT!

;)

:D

I just thought it would be a bit cheeky to suggest even more work for ya. It is of course your choice old chap. :)

Yay for randomness! The more randomness the better.

the only problem i can see is the overseas urbanites - an american stamp aint gooing to be much use for resending a cd once it gets to the uk. and what about sending their cds back to 'em. could get complicated...

I feel like Gene Clark after he was relegated to tambourine by David Crosby.

You're a splitter, BMD, the Kerry Packer of the boards.

You didnt even give me a chance to make a mons of the whole thing and have people sending compilations to themselves. I was looking forward to that.

:)

Nah, it's a very good idea, bmd. Like killer b said, it could get tricky with overseas urbanites (three already). Any ideas how to get round that?

My earlier idea was to supply people with two addresses but not the username. Would that work? Do we all know what we're called in the world of the real?

Would you need to use any names at all? Just address things to:

Urban75 Burn Swap Thingy
house
street
town
postcode
country

Would that work? I think it would. Unless people taking part live in the same house. In which case they'd just have to have a fight or something.

There's a bit more security that way too, as names/user names wouldn't be linked to addresses, if anyone's nervous about giving their address out.

I think it might, none of the addresses so far seem to present a problem.

So what kind of compilations are we meant to do? Is there any guarantee we won't end up with 80 minutes of ambient dub? Noooooooo!

Surely the pooling thing has to be done:

You need:

One comp CD
One jiffy envelope or similar
One name and address sticker
One blank sticker
Two lots of stamps

---------------------

- Write an identifying word on address sticker and CD (eg Mr Carrots)
- Put CD, one set of stamps, blank sticker and address sticker in envelope
- Send to pooling address
->
- Pooler now randomly assigns CDs and address labels - checking that Mr Carrots doesn't get the Mr Carrots CD.
- Re-use jiffy envelope by putting blank sticker over the stamps and putting on fresh stamps, and by putting address sticker over the pooling address.
- Post

Yeah? Are you with me or against me?

Do anything you want, it's kind of the point really. I'm not sure whether we've settled on a theme yet, if there'll be one at all. I'm looking forward to hearing some tracks I've never heard before, or ones I do know sequenced in a different way.

Yowsers! We need to use a sequencer!?!

Wired for sound - Idaho remix!

I'm broadly with you. But. Everyone's going to have to put stamps of enough value to cover the possibility of their CDs going to the US, Norway and/or Slovenia (so far).

well, i dont understand all this how its gonna be distributed malarkey, but I'm gam,e for a burning type thing. You still got me address Dirty, or shall I PM it again?
