what's the one about putting a message in a box putting the box in a car and driving the car around the world? - that always gets me going :)

That's uplifting if you're on a broken relationship downer.

'I'm a Believer' is a great uplifting tune.

I also like to put on Joe Jackson 'Can't Get What You Want 'til You Know What You Want' for a big motivational lift.

i'm in love with it!

interestingly prior to really hearing them i hated them.. ba said he knew i'd like them due to my frequent sporting of a cardigan.

i used to hate them as well, i lumped them in with britpop, which was silly of me, and it was only through people championing them on here that i gave them a chance and discovered they were more like pulp.

Party Fears Two - The Associates

Fuckin ace. Only problem I have is that everytime I listen to a McKenzie track these days I think about him topping himself in his mum's garden shed :(

Total, unrecognised, unrewarded genious. How friggin sad.

Fucking crap innit.

An innovative musical genious like that ends up skint living at his mums house. As if that isn't bad enough. What a very sad end to a great life.

Billy McKenzie was possibly my most admired musician as a teenager.

Long live 'Helicopter, helicopter'.

'Perhaps' has to be the most brilliant album to come out of the whole 80's electro from your bedroom genre. If only he'd been taught about the money.

Earlier this evening I marched around the kitchen to Dylan's 'Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)'.

Can you tell me where we're heading,

Lincoln county road or armageddon,

Seems like I been this way before. . .

Is there any truth in that, Senor?

Then there's Warren Zevon's 'Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner'

Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

Through sixty-six and seven they fought the Congo war
Fingers on their triggers, knee-deep in gore
For days and nights they battled the Bantu to their knees
They killed to earn their living and to help out the Congolese

Roland the Thompson gunner...

His comrades fought beside him - Van Owen and the rest
But of all the Thompson gunners Roland was the best
So the CIA decided they wanted Roland dead
That son-of-a-bitch Van Owen blew off Roland's head

Roland the headless Thompson gunner (Time, time, time
For another peaceful war
Norway's bravest son But time stands still for Roland
'Til he evens up the score)
They can still see his headless body stalking through the night
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun
In the muzzle flash of Roland's Thompson gun

Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg

Roland the headless Thompson gunner...

The eternal Thompson gunner, still wandering through the night
Now it's ten years later but he still keeps up the fight
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine and Berkeley
Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland's Thompson gun
And bought it

Dubversion's right to namecheck Van's Sweet Thing - but I have to say I think the Waterboy's version is better.

And Van's most uplifting stuff ever was on the album Into the Music. And I mean the entire album when I say that.

One last thing - the Specials 'Message to you Rudie'. The world seems a better brighter place while that one is playing.

My favourite pick you up uplifting tune has to be 'Better Must Come' by Delroy Wilson. :)

BETTER MUST COME (Delroy Wilson)

I've been trying a long, long time
Still I can't make it
Everything I try to do seems to go wrong
It seems I have done something wrong
But they're trying to keep me down

Who God bless, no one curse,
thank God I'm past the worst

Better must come one day
Better must come, they can't conquer me
Better must come [*fine]

I've been trying a long, long time
But I can't make it
Noone to give me a helping hand
The only sign keeps me down
Who God...

Oh my people get a seed (seat ?)
They're trying to take advantage of me
Better must come, better must come
Better must come one day
Better must come [da capo al *fine]

(Even though the lyrics are about being down.)
