Upgrading my XP desktop PC: tips and suggestions please!

maybe i'm being pigheadead but has anyone really noticed any major advnace in processing speed over the last 5 years? every app just hogs more resources it seems without the hardware gains....personally if your pushing it that much I would just get another desktop and run more than one machine.....the gain in a newer chip when you already have 4gb ram isn't going to be that great....just buy a cheap asus desktop from ebuyer for mundane tasks and use your flagship machine for the hardcore processing....whilst making a saving on a shared monitor, keyboard, mouse

You won't because it still doesn't need more computing power than a PIII to run even a really fancy word processor. More CPU power won't let you type faster. ;)

The increase has been huge in some cases, however in most cases the computer industry has been trying to persuade people to forget about that bit...

no need to pat me on the head......I've used them of all shapes and sizes for a multitude of things..in all OS flavours......you may see an increase if you say need to normalise a 700 meg wav mix in soundforge or deal with very large video file in terms of time to process for example.....but realistically no real noticeable gains have been in terms of multitasking on wintel platforms I don't think for a long time.........i'm on a core duo 2.2 with 3gb ram as I speak - but do I really notice when I have a load of stuff running? I'm not convinced.....but conversely I've known people who have released tunes commercially on a 1ghz processor with 1gb ram where no hardware has been used...to me it seems that the gains have been made in applications with the hardware whilst seeming to keep up still seems mediocre..
