Unsecured Wireless Networks

Iam said:
Leave them alone, ffs. Use the bandwidth if you want, but otherwise, fucking around with their settings/PCs is the actions of a complete twat.

I wasn't being serious originally, as I've already pointed out.

Having said that, we have managed to find out it was his next door neighbours network that had no password on the router so I've been able to advise him over the phone how to protect it with a password. The purpose of the thread was to point out that people are sometimes unaware that their networks are unprotected (albeit done in a 'jokey' manner) and as jaed points out the next person to connect to his network might not be as public spirited as I.

Yeah, it's better to leave their connection open to be raped.

*sighs*

Actually right now I am on an unsecure wireless network! How funky is that?

How do you go about "raping" a wireless connection?

Physically, erm, not really sure; whatever floats your boat. Metaphorically, anyone (like I am now) logging on and either abusing the connection or sniff on the computers on the same network.

Open connections are great and I'd like there to be lots as long as they run in wireless isolation mode, internet for all!....but anyone who doesn't secure their router is a muppet, it's not hard to have an automatic force password reset on all routers, so defaults are never left.

And you think that's on a par with "rape", do you?

My network is wired, but if I had a wireless connection I'd not have a problem with passers-by quickly logging on to post on a BB or check their email on a laptop or PDA. However, I live on a cul-de-sac in a rural area, there aren't a lot of passers-by, and it'd be more likely that a neighbour would establish a permanent connection to my network - I couldn't tolerate that, being on a capped broadband package.

I'd leave my network unsecured, but only if it were possible to ban certain computers (ie. neighbours) from accessing it.

So you don't think your comment about "leaving a connection open to be raped" was ill-advised, then?
Come on, you think that if you say you've fucked your computer that you've had penatrative sex with it?

Blimey, remind me not to post on a thread like this again!

This bollocks is piss-poor even for an Urban row.

Can't say I've raped a computer. How about you?

Unfortunately the use of the word "rape" in this context has become common among some people, I've seen it used on other bulletin boards. It makes me think though, that the person using the word in this way is a tosser.

I agree. It's like a barium meal but for detecting people who don't think about their language much. :)

Quite possibly the most boring thread title ever on U75.

Just sat here setting up a nice new spanky wireless network at the fen_father_in_law's and noticed that there are no less than 3 completely unsecured wireless networks within range. The question is shall I log on and change all the settings on their routers to teach them a lesson or not? mmm? ;) :( :)
why the fuck would you do that? have they hired you to teach them?
I'm currently connected on an unsecured wireless network. the router has a password of course, and if anyone sniffed that (not too hard) and changed the settings, I'd be pretty annoyed (just as I'd be annoyed if someone took something from my car just because they'd happened to spot an unlocked door).

the network's unsecured btw, because I like to set them up that way - if anyone's passing and needs a net connection, they can use mine. if it ever became a problem (someone sucking up all of my bandwidth), I'd change the setup, but at the moment it's not causing any problems.

as to 'terrorists' using the network..., well, I don't like the idea of a world where noone can ever be anonymous. it cuts both ways anyhow - if my network is open, it makes it harder to attribute activity coming from my network to me.

There is precisely *no* difference between that and you securing the network "on their behalf".

It's not your job to police the internet.

Well there is clearly a difference because they are different.

If someone is stupid enough to leave their connection open and their router with a default password then they need my help. Otherwise it is only a matter of time before someone changes it and locks them out.

Oh do fuck off; you clearly have no idea of what the word rape means. Have a look in a dictionary.

So, why do you think manufacturers have not enforced security, by default?

Probably the same reason why by default Windows XP is shite; manufacturers are lazy.

Oh whatever; so far everyone I've done it for has thanked me because they didn't know any better.

But hey, you keep on believing whatever you like.
