University Quandry

To behonest, I'm getting older and less financially secure so the prospect of living away from my home or selling up and moving is not even a serious debate. From the universities in London that offered me places (all of them, except UCL), I decided to stick with what I know. The facilities are OKish, and I'll probably change after the first 3 years and go somewhere else to finish off. In all honesty I did get all sexed up for the bartlett but after they screwed me about and made me sweat my balls off (at my age) for an interview in which they totally destroyed me, I wouldn't really take them seriously again. I knew I didn't have a place the minute I walked in and he asked me who I was.

Afterall, it isn't the establishment that makes you... or so I'd like to kid myself. hehehhee

Double posts, tut tut - senility setting in eh? ;) :p

The Bartlett is definately not somewhere you want to go if you're of a week disposition, they will tear your fucking soul out. They make people burst into tears in crits - they're not allowed to swear or throw models out of the window anymore mind you.

Excuse that, I didn't see that happen. Anyhow, as for weak people: I ended up having a discussion about Daniel Liberskind with that moron who interviewed me. My argument was that Spaniel Lever-skin isn't an architect, more a pretentious turd bitter about his heritage. I don't think that went down well with him, since he seemed to adore his work.

Ah well, at least I spoke my mind.

I'll repeat myself: If you're going to get yourself into debt to the tune of ££,£££, make sure you treat it as a serious investment.

Currently, the Higher Education system is a bit of a scam. Do you realise what the youth unemployment figures would be if it wasn't for the deluded generation who believe that the 'opportunity' to get themselves into £15-20 grand's worth of debt is going to pay off?

Lots of young graduates leave uni (especially the old polyversities) and end up unemployed, or underemployed in McJobs.

Years ago, all those young people out of work who couldn't make the grade to get into a good uni and receive a student grant would have been on the dole, receiving housing benefit and maybe £30 a week. Now they are at polyversity, paying for the 'privilege' of being unemployed and racking up tens of thousands worth of debt.

Do you *really* think that the expansion of higher education has been achieved for *your* benefit, as opposed to the benefit of the government in masking what would otherwise be high unemployment levels?

Young people today are *paying* to be unemployed - and they will be paying for their period of unemployment for the best part of the next decade.

Wake up and smell the coffee you poor deluded soul!

going to a leading university does not guarantee a job, my friend got a 2:1 from imperial, it took him over a year to find a job..

They are other qualities employers look for beyond the status of a degree, such as personality, non-academic skills, real life experience .. the list could go on..

Education is a gamble, like a lot of choices in life, loans do not have to be paid untill the student earns at least £15,000 , not every one can take this gamble, don;t run people down that want to go to ex-poly unis.

Higher education in this country is a charade. What gets you a job is
  • Gift of the gab.
  • A decent CV.
  • Contacts, contacts, contacts.
  • Timing.
  • Luck.
By all means it has nothing to do with whether or not you can do the job or if you're qualified to drive a fork-lift or not. But if you're going to go to university, go somewhere where you're likely to learn something. Otherwise go somewhere, where you can make contacts with people who are going somewhere, piggie-back rides get you the job too.
