UNISON NEC results

Nigel Flanagan stood as the most pro-Labour (and pro-Prentis) candidate on the Unison NEC slate so I think those of us on the left would welcome his defeat.

His victimisation though is a basic attack on trade unionism and civil liberties so we should naturally defend him as an act of solidarity. The conradictions here are for him to work out, not us.

What contradiction? I don't see one!

Just glancing at the Trades Union Certification Officers website (as you do) and noticed that the last decision they/he had to take was adjudicating over a complaint from one Mr Y Bakhsh that 'the union had modified his election address during the union's elections to its National Executive for the period 2005/07 and sought an enforcement order requiring the union to re-run the election'.

Apparently the union admitted it had done, but they won't re-run the election anyway.

Anyone know how they changed it?

Not a verbatim quote but there was part of the election address where Yunus talked about a decent wage for "all the members" this was changed to "four members" Yunus got sone stick in his branch from those asking if they were one of the four, not sure if this made much of a diference but there was also an unusually large amount of spoiled votes in the election, The right wing new labour stooge elected to the position has kept a low profile since apart from sending our branch a xmas card.

I doubt we will see a re run of the election but hopefully the left will win this back next time around. as an aside the regional convenor left the SWP and is waiting acceptance into labour membership.

The 'Marxist' parties who hold a majority on the PCS union recently voted to support a government-TUC deal to increase the retirement age for future public sector workers. Which includes me.

This vote was supported by their executive members in the SWP and the SP - don't trust the bastards ever again, in UNISON or anywhere else. I'm no a supporter of the Alliance for Workers Liberty (AWL) but at least their member voted against this attack on the working class, so credit to them.

The only way we can be sure that we won't be sold out is by creating unions that are controlled by their members, not some self-serving elite. Rank-and file organisation, direct action and direct democracy is the only way forward, don't get sucked in by the SWP and SP - they are liars. If they behave like this given just a little power, imagine what they'd be like if they ever got into government. The only people we can trust are ourselves, the union members, not some party claiming to speak for us. Scum.

You weren't thinking of joining the Wobblies, were you?
