There's a fundamental difference. When the BNP get elected, racist attacks rocket by 600%. And when fascists come to power, millions die and the country becomes a virtual barracks, an apartheid state, where all freedom of speech is taken away. When fascists gain power, paramilitary thugs stalk the streets. Also fascism is a movement supported by the capitalist class in the last resort in order to smash the working class movement, whereas socialism is an attempt to realise a society of genuine democracy where "the workers are in the saddle" (to use Orwell's phrase) so we are talking of complete opposites.
When Respect get someone elected racist attacks don't soar, there aren't people being stabbed in the streets because of the colour of their skin, Respect candidates have not been prosecuted for sending razor blades to Jewish people, Respect doesn't have leaders who strut around in SS uniforms or who have convictions for racist attacks or the publication of holocaust denial magazines.
Hmm. Take a look at socialist / communist regimes - the Khmer Rouge, Maoist China, Stalinist Russia etc - to see that socialism is capable of being every bit as brutalistic as Nazism/fascism, if not more so.
